Coinbase's Launches tab lets users trade freshly minted tokens on Base and Solana via built-in DEX moments after launch, with Jupiter routing Solana trades.

Coinbase cbBTC$63,327.39-3.2% opened its "Launches" tab on Monday, enabling users to discover and trade newly minted tokens on Solana and Base immediately after they go onchain, without waiting for a formal centralized listing. Announced via Coinbase's X account on July 27, the tab routes trades through Coinbase's built-in decentralized exchange, bypassing the weeks-long review process that normally precedes a standard Coinbase listing.

The move steps directly into territory that dedicated token launch and discovery platforms have occupied, which have long offered immediate onchain access as their core differentiator from major exchanges. Coinbase's version brings a compliance layer and corporate interface to the same idea.

How the Coinbase Launches Tab Works

The tab appears in both the main Coinbase app and the rebranded Base App, which bundles onchain trading, earning, and staking in one interface. When a new token deploys on Solana or Base, an automated indexing system detects it without any setup required from the token issuer. Third-party filters screen for obviously malicious contracts before a token surfaces in the interface.

For Solana trades, Coinbase routes orders through Jupiter JUP$0.182-5.1%, the chain's dominant DEX aggregator, to source liquidity across multiple pools and return the best available execution price. Jupiter's routing layer is already the standard execution backend across most Solana DeFi applications; its inclusion here means the Launches tab draws on the same liquidity depth as native Solana wallets, accessed through a familiar exchange interface. In the seven days to July 27, Jupiter processed more than 10 million swaps totaling $2.4 billion in aggregated swap volume, per Solana Compass program analytics.

Coinbase explicitly marks all tokens in the tab as unvetted assets, according to The Defiant.

Access Requirements and Liquidity Floor

Trading through the Launches tab requires a self-custody wallet; the feature does not work through a custodial Coinbase account. Coinbase One subscribers may receive fee waivers on DEX transactions, though specific fee amounts have not been disclosed.

Tokens must meet a "sufficient liquidity" threshold before appearing in the tab. Coinbase has not publicly defined this floor or how it is calculated. That gap is material: a token can be live onchain and simply not surface in the Launches tab if its initial liquidity pool falls below an undisclosed cutoff. Very early launches with thin pools may remain invisible until secondary buyers add depth. Geographic restrictions also apply; which regions are excluded has not been specified.

The Vector Acquisition Behind the Discovery Layer

The infrastructure enabling automated token detection traces to Coinbase's late-2025 acquisition of Vector, a Solana-native platform originally built by the team behind Tensor NFT marketplace for tracking and trading newly launched tokens. Vector's continuous monitoring tools gave Coinbase the ability to detect new onchain assets automatically, rather than relying on the submission-and-review process that governs centralized listings.

At Solana's Breakpoint conference in December 2025, Coinbase announced it would enable native Solana DEX trading across any token directly in the app. The Launches tab builds the discovery layer on top of that execution foundation: the DEX handles trade routing, Vector-derived indexing finds the tokens, and Jupiter sources the liquidity.

Competing for New Token Volume

Dedicated launch platforms have historically operated without centralized exchange involvement: fully permissionless, with no compliance filters, no corporate interface, and no geographic restrictions. The tradeoff Coinbase offers is a brand layer and nominal screening in exchange for those constraints.

That tradeoff targets a specific user: someone who wants early token access but prefers the Coinbase interface over a standalone Solana wallet, and who is in a region where the feature is available. Coinbase's broad retail user base makes that a sizable potential audience; the self-custody wallet requirement is a meaningful conversion step that most custodial users have historically not taken. How many complete it will determine whether the Launches tab meaningfully redirects new-token volume, or becomes a secondary surface used by the portion of Coinbase's audience already comfortable onchain.

The feature is live. The dedicated launch platforms it competes with still carry deeper liquidity networks and native tooling built specifically for early-stage token activity. Whether Coinbase's distribution advantage offsets that gap is a question the data will settle over the next few months.
