How Dynamic NFTs Will Replace Coffee Shop Punchcards (Underdog Protocol)
At the forefront of this revolution is Underdog Protocol, a project that recently won the grand prize at the Solana Grizzly Throne hackathon. ... Underdog Protocol is reimagining NFTs as dynamic, updateable assets that can serve as powerful tools for businesses, creators, and communities.
Underdog Protocol
Underdog Protocol is a developer-focused API platform built on Solana that abstracts the complexity of on-chain NFT operations into a straightforward REST interface. Its tagline, "Turn Wallets into Users," reflects a core design philosophy: make it easy for any product, regardless of Web3 expertise, to issue and manage digital assets for real users at scale.
The Problem Underdog Solves
Integrating NFTs into a live product has traditionally required smart contract expertise, wallet infrastructure, knowledge of Solana's rent model, and significant engineering overhead. Underdog Protocol removes that entire stack. Developers get a hosted API endpoint, an API key, and a dashboard, and can start minting NFTs within minutes without touching a Rust program or managing SOL for gas.
How It Works
The platform organizes everything around three primitives: Projects, NFTs, and Transactions. A Project represents a collection; Underdog deploys the underlying Solana program, secures the collection NFT in a vault, and verifies that subsequent NFTs belong to that project. NFTs are created, updated, transferred, or burned via HTTP calls — with eager or lazy minting and batch support. Dynamic metadata updates mean NFT attributes can change in response to user behavior in real time. Transactions surface through a dashboard with webhook support. Authentication is API-key based, with a free Devnet endpoint and a paid Mainnet endpoint.
Key Features
Gasless operation: Underdog absorbs the SOL costs of minting and on-chain operations, billing developers in USDC at a flat 0.01 USDC per NFT and 0.50 USDC per collection. Developers do not need to fund wallets or manage gas overhead.
Transferable and soulbound NFTs: Projects can be configured to issue freely transferable NFTs or soulbound tokens permanently bound to a recipient wallet — the latter used for credentials, achievements, and reputation signals.
Passports (embedded wallets): Underdog's Passport product provisions embedded wallets for users who authenticate with Google, Twitter, or Apple social login. Passport wallets have zero on-chain rent until activated, and only the user's own authenticated wallet can sign — Underdog retains no signing authority.
Dynamic metadata: NFT attributes can be updated via API call at any time after minting, enabling use cases like evolving game items, updated loyalty statuses, or live credential tracking.
Web2 integrations: Native connectors for Zapier, Discord, Telegram, and Notion allow non-developer products to trigger NFT issuance through familiar automation tools without writing code.
Supported Asset Types
Underdog supports four categories of on-chain Solana assets: Compressed NFTs (using Metaplex Bubblegum and state compression for high-volume, low-cost issuance), Core NFTs (Metaplex Core standard), fungible tokens, and semifungible tokens. This range covers the spectrum from mass-market loyalty tokens to unique 1-of-1 credentials.
Notable Integrations and Use Cases
Solana Mobile: Underdog minted 20,000 soulbound SAGA Tokens for Saga phone early adopters over a two-week window. The SAGA Token served as the on-chain credential unlocking partner airdrops from Magic Eden, Audius, and Dialect — demonstrating Underdog's capacity for high-volume, time-sensitive credential campaigns.
SuperteamDAO: Underdog powers on-chain reputation and contribution tracking for SuperteamDAO, the largest Solana developer community organization. Members earn verifiable credentials for contributions that accumulate into a portable reputation record.
Parcl: The real estate price index protocol used Underdog to issue early adopter reward NFTs to its initial community.
Dispatch Forums: Underdog provides membership credentialing for the on-chain discussion platform, gating forum access through verifiable NFT ownership.
Team and Funding
Underdog Protocol was co-founded by Tony Plasencia, who previously worked at Uber and Ritual.co. The project raised a 500,000 USD seed round in Q4 2021 from Onedog Capital, eiV Ventures, and Underdog Labs at a 10 million USD post-money valuation. The protocol's TypeScript SDK and a Next.js starter template are open-source and available at github.com/UnderdogProtocol.
Security
Underdog's architecture is designed so that the platform holds no signing authority over Passport wallets — only the wallet that activated the Passport can sign transactions on its behalf. This limits the blast radius of any platform-level compromise for user assets. No public third-party smart contract audits have been documented in available sources. The protocol relies on the security guarantees of Solana's runtime and the Metaplex program suite for its core NFT operations.
Positioning in the Solana Ecosystem
Underdog occupies a distinct niche in the Solana stack: it is infrastructure for builders who want NFT functionality without NFT expertise. The target user is a product team that already has users and wants to add digital ownership, loyalty mechanics, or verifiable credentials — not a Web3-native studio building a standalone NFT collection.
The platform's gasless model and REST API approach mirror the abstraction layer that services like Stripe or Twilio brought to payments and messaging — the idea that a developer should be able to add a capability via a single API call without understanding the underlying complexity. For Solana, where NFT minting still involves program deployments, rent mechanics, and Metaplex tooling, Underdog's abstraction is a meaningful reduction in time-to-integration for teams outside the core Web3 developer pool.
