Umbrella Network

Umbrella Network was a decentralized, community-owned oracle service that provided blockchain projects with secure, scalable, and cost-effective data feeds. The project launched in early 2021 and positioned itself as a lower-cost alternative to incumbent oracles by bundling hundreds of price pairs into a single on-chain transaction. On May 27, 2025, Umbrella Network announced it would cease operations, with its core products shutting down on September 30, 2025. The official domain umb.network has since been taken over by an unrelated sweepstakes casino, and the documentation site returns 404 errors. Umbrella Network operated as a Layer 2 oracle. A decentralized network of validator nodes collected price and other off-chain data from multiple sources, reached consensus, and combined the verified data into a Merkle Tree structure. Only the Merkle root was submitted on-chain in a single transaction; individual data points were later proven against that root using Merkle proofs. This meant hundreds of price feeds could be updated in the same block for approximately the same gas cost as updating one feed on a conventional oracle. Validators staked UMB tokens to participate and earned rUMB reward tokens, which could be converted to UMB at a fixed rate. The project was founded by Sam Kim and John Chen. The network supported Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Linea, and Solana. Products included Layer 2 price feeds, an on-demand oracle, verifiable random function, bridge, passport, and staking. The native UMB token served governance and staking functions. The official shutdown announcement was made on May 27, 2025, citing a prolonged crypto bear market that depleted the project treasury. Oracle, Bridge, and Passport products ceased operations September 30, 2025. Staking ran until March 20, 2026. The project is now fully inactive.
