Phemex
Institutional-grade CEX with a Solana-native on-chain meme trading layer
On-chain activity
Phemex Exchange
Phemex Exchange implements centralized order matching through high-performance trading engines, enabling spot and derivatives trading with up to 100x leverage. The platform processes transactions using custom CrossEngine and TradingEngine components while maintaining cold storage security protocols.
Phemex Lending Protocol
Phemex Lending Protocol implements peer-to-peer lending through smart contract automation, enabling instant borrowing against cryptocurrency collateral. The system provides liquidity pools with automated interest rate mechanisms and real-time collateral monitoring.
Phemex
Phemex is a Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange founded in November 2019 by a group of former Morgan Stanley executives who set out to build an institutional-grade trading platform accessible to retail users. From a derivatives-centric launch, Phemex has evolved into a full-spectrum Web3 financial ecosystem serving more than ten million registered users across global markets, with a product surface that now spans spot trading, perpetual futures, copy trading, automated bots, earn products, and a Solana-native on-chain meme token trading layer called MemeX.
Core Exchange Infrastructure
The exchange lists more than 600 spot assets alongside USDT-margined and coin-margined perpetual contracts with leverage up to 100x. Its matching engine processes up to 300,000 transactions per second, responds to orders in under a millisecond, and executes within five to ten milliseconds — benchmarks that rival institutional venue throughput. In 2026, Phemex upgraded its futures engine, lifting throughput from roughly 25,000 to 40,000 transactions per second, a 60 percent jump.
The fee model is tiered: standard spot trading costs 0.10 percent maker and taker; a paid Premium membership unlocks zero spot fees. Perpetual futures sit at 0.01 percent maker and 0.06 percent taker for all tiers. The Phemex Token (PT) adds a further layer of cost reduction, granting holders 20 percent off spot fees and 10 percent off contract fees, as well as staking-weighted governance rights through PhemexDAO.
Beyond trading, Phemex offers fixed and flexible savings products, a launchpool, and an on-chain lending protocol. Copy trading lets users mirror top-performing traders, while grid, Martingale, and signal-based bots automate execution for systematic strategies. TradFi products — tokenized stocks, metals, and commodity futures — round out an offering that CEO Federico Variola, who took the helm in 2023, has positioned as a pivot from pure derivatives toward a multi-asset hybrid platform.
MemeX: Solana On-Chain Trading Without the Friction
The most consequential product addition for Solana users is MemeX, which went live on January 18, 2025. MemeX is a centralized-access, on-chain trading layer that lets Phemex account holders buy and sell meme tokens directly on Solana — and on Base and BNB Smart Chain — without ever leaving their Phemex dashboard or managing an external wallet.
The design addresses the two highest-friction points in retail on-chain meme trading: wallet management and gas fees. Users trade using USDT held in their Phemex spot balance, with no need for Phantom, no SOL for gas, and no cross-chain bridging. Solana trades settle in approximately one to two seconds. An AI-powered discovery layer screens trending tokens and surfaces new launches before they appear on centralized order books, giving Phemex users early access to meme token activity in a format familiar to exchange traders. Dedicated leverage and futures products for meme coins are available through a companion Onchain Derivatives module.
MemeX gained early attention when it became one of the first platforms to list the TRUMP meme token during the token's surge in late January 2025, just days after launch. The product reflects a broader industry bet that the largest unmet need in meme token markets is a bridge between on-chain speed and centralized UX — a gap Phemex is attempting to close from the exchange side.
Security: The January 2025 Breach and Recovery
On January 23, 2025 — five days after MemeX launched — Phemex's hot wallets were drained by attackers who were subsequently attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group by the FBI. The breach affected assets across sixteen blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, and Binance Smart Chain. Published estimates put the total loss at approximately 85 million dollars in hot wallet assets; cold wallets were not compromised.
Phemex's response was notable for its speed and transparency. The exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals, published Merkle-Tree Proof of Reserves within hours to demonstrate that cold wallet balances remained intact, covered all user losses from company reserves, and staged a systematic withdrawal reopening — Ethereum-based assets first, then Bitcoin and Solana, then Arbitrum, Optimism, BSC, Polygon, and Base — restoring full withdrawal access within three days.
Post-incident, Phemex migrated its custody architecture to Fireblocks MPC, implemented per-user unique cold wallets, mandated multi-signature authorization across all hot wallet operations, and introduced continuous cybersecurity monitoring. The incident sits alongside major exchange breaches of the era in terms of nominal dollar loss, though the company's proactive response and full compensation of user funds distinguished it from several higher-profile failures in which users bore lasting losses.
Decentralization Layer and Identity
Phemex's Web3 strategy extends beyond MemeX. The Phemex Soul Pass is a non-transferable soulbound token (SBT), issued to users who meet certain verification thresholds, that functions as a permissionless passport to privileges within the Phemex ecosystem — including access to governance participation, exclusive yields, and partner integrations. The design draws on Vitalik Buterin's concept of soulbound tokens as verifiable, non-financialized identity anchors for decentralized applications.
PhemexDAO formalizes on-chain governance for PT holders, giving the community a direct mechanism to influence product direction, fee structures, and treasury allocation. The DAO layer, combined with the Soul Pass identity system, is Phemex's stated path toward a "semi-centralized" model in which CEX efficiency and liquidity coexist with decentralized accountability.
Reach and Regulatory Standing
Phemex holds a Money Services Business (MSB) registration with FinCEN and a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license in Lithuania, while deliberately excluding US and UK users from most products due to regulatory exposure in those jurisdictions. The exchange exited Ontario, Canada, in December 2024. For the markets it does serve, it publishes rolling Proof of Reserves — with Merkle Tree verification open to any user — as its primary assurance mechanism in lieu of comprehensive external audits.
With a matching engine rebuilt for institutional throughput, a Solana-native on-chain meme trading product, and a governance layer in active development, Phemex occupies an increasingly hybrid position in the CEX landscape: a conventional exchange by order book and custody, but one that has made on-chain Solana access a first-class feature of its core product.
