NDAX

NDAX (National Digital Asset Exchange) is one of Canada's most heavily regulated cryptocurrency trading platforms, incorporated in 2018 and based in Calgary, Alberta. It operates as both a CIRO-recognized Investment Dealer and a registered Money Services Business under FINTRAC, and it holds the distinction of being the first Canadian crypto exchange to achieve SOC 2 Type II certification. With over $1 billion in assets under custody, NDAX serves retail, institutional, and business clients exclusively within Canada, offering a full suite of services from simple spot purchases to white-label infrastructure for other firms.

A Canadian Exchange Built Around the Canadian Dollar

NDAX's defining characteristic is its deep integration with the Canadian financial system. Every trading pair on the platform is denominated in Canadian dollars (CAD), so users never need to acquire USDC, USDT, or any other intermediate asset to start trading. CAD deposits via Interac e-Transfer are free and typically settle quickly; wire transfers are also accepted. Withdrawals carry modest fees ($1.50 for Interac, $4.99 for wire), but there are no deposit charges — a meaningful advantage over international competitors who often levy funding fees on both sides of a transaction.

Solana (SOL) trades natively on NDAX as a SOL/CAD pair, meaning Canadian buyers can move from a bank account to on-chain Solana ownership without touching a foreign currency or paying conversion spreads. The current trading fee is a flat 0.2% on all trades regardless of volume — the same rate for a $500 purchase as for a $500,000 block trade through the OTC desk. There are no tiered maker/taker structures and no hidden spreads built into the quoted price.

Solana on NDAX

Beyond spot trading, NDAX supports Solana staking directly from the exchange. Users who hold SOL in their NDAX account can stake it to earn a percentage APY, with rewards credited periodically. NDAX takes a 20% administrative fee on staking rewards across its entire staking suite, which now spans 13 assets and offers yields up to 13% APY. The staking program is notable for Canadian regulatory compliance: as a CIRO-regulated dealer operating under provincial securities rules, NDAX's staking offerings are structured to meet Canadian legal standards — a distinction from offshore platforms that have faced enforcement actions in Canada.

NDAX's Solana integration also benefits from the platform's broader order-book infrastructure. Traders can place limit orders, stop orders, trailing stop orders, and fill-or-kill orders on the SOL/CAD pair, giving more sophisticated participants tools that are uncommon on simpler Canadian platforms. TradingView charting is integrated directly into the trading interface.

Platform Features

Retail trading: The standard interface supports market and limit orders with a mobile app available on iOS and Android. A simplified "buy/sell" mode caters to first-time buyers who want to acquire crypto in a few taps without configuring order types.

Auto-Invest (DCA): Users can schedule recurring purchases of any supported asset — including SOL — at daily, weekly, or monthly intervals. Dollar-cost averaging into Solana without manual intervention is one of the more practical features for long-term holders in the Canadian market.

OTC Desk: Trades exceeding $200,000 CAD can be routed through NDAX's over-the-counter desk, where a dedicated team provides bespoke quotes and settlement. This is particularly relevant for institutional buyers seeking large SOL positions without moving the visible order book.

API Trading: NDAX exposes a full REST and WebSocket API (documented at apidoc.ndax.io) covering authentication, order management, account positions, Level 1 and Level 2 market data, and deposit/withdrawal ticketing. The API is asset-agnostic, treating SOL and BTC identically as tradable "products," which simplifies programmatic strategies across the asset list.

Treasury and Institutional Services: Businesses can access treasury management tools, recurring settlement, and reporting features. NDAX also offers a white-label trading platform for firms that want to launch branded crypto products on top of its regulated infrastructure — a B2B revenue line that distinguishes it from pure retail brokers.

Regulatory and Security Profile

NDAX holds a layered regulatory stack that is unusual in the Canadian market:

  • CIRO Investment Dealer status across all provinces, functioning as both a Marketplace and an Alternative Trading System (ATS)
  • FINTRAC registration as a Money Services Business, with full AML/KYC compliance under the Proceeds of Crime and Terrorist Financing Act
  • Quebec AMF registration, extending regulated access to Quebec residents who are excluded from some other Canadian platforms
  • SOC 2 Type II certification, covering security, availability, and confidentiality of operational controls

On the custody side, NDAX stores approximately 95% of customer assets in cold storage via Ledger Vault, supplemented by MPC (multi-party computation) technology and multi-signature wallet controls. Cold wallet holdings carry $5 million in insurance coverage. Fiat balances are held in segregated accounts at a Canadian Crown-owned financial institution, ring-fenced from NDAX's operating capital and identifiable in the event of insolvency.

Asset Coverage and Recent Additions

NDAX lists over 65 cryptocurrencies, all paired against CAD. In addition to Solana, the list includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Cardano, Polkadot, Avalanche, SUI, SEI, ONDO, and TAO, among others. The platform expanded its staking suite in 2026 to add GRAM (10% APY), HYPE (1.5% APY), and HBAR (1% APY), reinforcing its positioning as Canada's largest homegrown staking product. Bitcoin Lightning Network support for faster BTC settlement was also added recently.

Notably, USDT was delisted in 2025; USDC is now the primary stablecoin available on the platform. Margin, futures, and leveraged trading are not offered — consistent with the regulatory posture of a CIRO-regulated dealer operating under Canadian investor-protection rules.

Context Within the Canadian Crypto Landscape

Canada has produced a small number of domestically regulated exchanges, and NDAX occupies a specific niche: it competes not on asset breadth or leverage products but on regulatory depth, fee transparency, and CAD-native settlement. Its 0.2% flat fee is among the lowest of any FINTRAC-registered platform, and its combination of CIRO dealer status with provincial securities registration in all provinces (including Quebec) gives it broader legal reach than several competitors.

For Solana specifically, NDAX represents one of the most straightforward regulated onramps for Canadian participants — a SOL/CAD pair with no currency conversion, staking support, and the ability to place sophisticated order types, all under a framework recognized by Canadian regulators. As institutional interest in Solana grows, particularly following developments like spot Solana ETF approvals and expanded DeFi infrastructure, a CIRO-regulated entry point with OTC capacity becomes increasingly relevant for Canadian capital seeking exposure to the Solana ecosystem.
