Melee is a permissionless prediction market platform built on Solana that lets anyone create and trade markets on virtually any topic — sports, crypto, politics, pop culture, economics — without a gatekeeper deciding what questions are worth asking. Its defining technical innovation is the Parimutuel Market Maker (PMM), a new liquidity primitive the team describes as "the first significant update to parimutuel systems in 160 years."

The Problem with Existing Prediction Markets

Every major prediction market that existed before Melee required centralized curation: a team deciding which events merit a market, which outcomes are valid, and when trading opens or closes. That gating keeps markets narrow and slow. Traditional parimutuels, meanwhile, suffer a structural flaw — late capital dilutes early participants' odds, punishing the speculators who entered when conviction (and risk) was highest. AMM-based approaches require upfront liquidity subsidies and bleed value as providers rebalance into losing outcomes. CLOBs need professional market makers before any trading can occur, making cold-start markets unviable.

How the PMM Works

The Parimutuel Market Maker synthesizes three existing market structures into one engine. Every market is a parimutuel pool at its core — participants back outcomes, and the pool sets odds and pays out — but the PMM adds two critical layers on top.

Mutually-aware price curves. Instead of pricing each outcome independently, the PMM prices every outcome as a function of the entire pool state. When capital flows into one side of a market, all outcome prices update simultaneously. This prevents the inconsistencies that arise when outcomes are repriced in isolation and ensures that the total pool is preserved through every trade.

Minimum-return floors. At the moment a trader enters a market, the PMM locks in a deterministic payout floor for their position. That floor can only increase over time — it never decreases. Early participants who stay in the pool while the market moves against them are effectively providing counterparty liquidity to later traders, and the PMM compensates them for that service through counterparty-liquidity rewards that accrue passively as volume grows. The combined payout — floor plus rewards — is what Melee refers to when it says payouts have a "guaranteed floor that locks on entry" and "liquidity rewards that accrue throughout the duration of a market."

This architecture solves cold-start: markets open from the very first dollar of capital without requiring professional market makers or subsidies. Settlement remains peer-to-peer among participants.

For traders who want liquidity before resolution, a separate Cashout LP vault allows pre-resolution exits at a discounted price. The discount compensates LPs who provide that immediate exit service, and those LPs earn the spread plus the settlement value of any winning shares they hold.

Simulation data shared in the PMM litepaper, drawn from 126 Bitcoin markets, found that presale positions returned positive in 65.1% of cases with a 12.7% median return, though the downside reached -22.7% in low-volatility markets.

Permissionless Market Creation and the Creator Economy

Any user can launch a prediction market on Melee in under a minute, with no centralized approval required. Markets can target any factual or opinion-based question. Market creators earn a cut of every trade placed in markets they originate — the platform documents creator earnings as high as 20% of trading volume, with one example showing a single market generating over $317,000 in creator revenue on $15.87 million in trading volume.

This creator-economy layer is a deliberate design choice. By aligning financial incentives with content creation, the platform aims to have creators build audiences around their markets and share them natively on X and Discord. One-click sharing tools are built into the interface. The tagline "The People's Prediction Market" and the framing of creator-made markets without middlemen is central to how the team positions the product.

Access and Current Status

As of mid-2026, Melee is in beta with access distributed through invitation codes and a badge-claiming system. The platform uses a Melee Score — a unified reputation rating tracking activity across the app — with tiers from Bronze through Champion. The live application is accessible at melee.markets, built atop the PMM engine at pmm.melee.markets. Markets publicly shown display trading volumes ranging from several million to over thirty million per market.

Team and Funding

Melee was founded in 2025 by a team known publicly as ZenLlama, Maximilian, and Kai. Maximilian previously served as strategic head of Ava Labs and Chief Strategy Officer of NodeKit, and built a following as a crypto content creator. Kai brings engineering experience from Microsoft and Amazon. The broader team includes engineers with backgrounds at Solana Foundation and traders from institutional finance.

In September 2025, Melee closed a $3.5 million seed round led by Variant, with participation from DBA. Angel investors include Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana Labs, Meltem Demirors, Chief Strategy Officer of CoinShares, and crypto investor Santiago Roel Santos.

Security and Audits

No public security audit has been published as of this writing. The PMM mechanism is documented in a publicly available litepaper that describes the proprietary curve family and parameter schedule governing pricing behavior, though the specific mathematical parameters are not disclosed.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Melee is Solana-native by design. The PMM's real-time, synchronized repricing of all outcomes across a market would be impractical on slower or more expensive chains — each trade triggers simultaneous price updates across every outcome, a throughput and cost profile that Solana enables. The founding team has stated the mechanism is "only possible on Solana." The platform competes in a segment that includes Polymarket (cross-chain, centrally curated) and a range of newer Solana-native prediction experiments, differentiating through the combination of permissionless creation, floor-protected downside, and passive yield for early participants.
