Butter Omnichain Service
Butter Omnichain Service provides cross-chain messaging infrastructure through ZK light client technology, enabling projects to synchronize data and execute contract calls across multiple blockchains. The system verifies cross-chain transactions using zero-knowledge proofs while maintaining decentralized security.
Butter Network
Butter Network is an omnichain interoperability infrastructure platform designed to let users and developers move assets and data between blockchains without relying on multisigs, centralized relayers, or external validator sets. Its core proposition is trust-minimized cross-chain execution: instead of a committee vouching that a transaction happened on another chain, Butter uses zero-knowledge proofs and light-client verification to cryptographically settle that question on-chain.
The Problem It Addresses
Cross-chain infrastructure has historically forced a trade-off between security and decentralization. Bridge designs based on multisignature committees introduce custodial risk — if signers collude or are compromised, user funds can be stolen. Designs based on external validator networks add latency and third-party trust assumptions. Butter Network's stated goal is to eliminate both by anchoring verification in math rather than in institutions.
Core Technical Architecture
Butter's interoperability layer is built around the MAP Relay Chain, a dedicated coordination chain that sits between source and destination networks. Every cross-chain operation follows a five-step flow:
- A user initiates a transfer or swap on the source chain. The Router contract accepts the transaction and passes it to the Bridge module, which locks or burns the input assets and emits a cross-chain message.
- The MAP Relay Chain picks up the message, verifies it using its own light-client view of the source chain, and deducts fees — broken down into affiliate fees for referrers, bridge fees for the service, and base fees to cover gas on the destination.
- The relay chain generates a proof of the verified event for the destination chain.
- The destination chain's Bridge contract validates that proof using ZK plus light-client technology. The ClientNode contract specifically handles this hybrid verification, checking MAP Relay Chain state without trusting any intermediary.
- Once verification passes, assets are released or minted on the destination and routed through local liquidity — a DEX or AMM pool — to complete any requested swap.
The two developer-facing primitives that expose this flow are transferOut (sends data and assets to a destination contract by specifying a target chain ID) and transferIn (validates incoming cross-chain data against light clients before delivering it). Together, they allow dApp developers to treat cross-chain calls much like local contract calls, with the relay and verification layers abstracted away.
The ZK light-client approach means that rather than downloading full block headers from connected chains, Butter nodes validate a compact cryptographic proof derived from hash functions and Merkle proofs. This reduces the data requirements for verification while preserving the cryptographic guarantees of a full node.
ButterSwap: The Consumer-Facing Layer
ButterSwap is Butter Network's end-user DEX aggregator and cross-chain swap interface. It routes transactions across multiple chains and liquidity sources, surfacing estimated fees and timing before a user confirms. To the user, the experience is a single swap flow even though the transaction spans multiple blockchains.
ButterSwap ranks fourth on DefiLlama's cross-chain protocol leaderboard. The platform reports $3 billion in TVL through partnerships within the Merlin ecosystem, a Bitcoin layer-2 network.
Supported Networks
Butter Network operates across more than ten blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, TRON, Avalanche, Polygon, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, zkSync, Base, Linea, XLayer, and Merlin Chain. Solana is treated as a primary integration target alongside EVM networks, with ButterSwap supporting direct swaps between Solana-native tokens and assets on other connected chains.
Developer Use Cases
Beyond token swaps, Butter Network's Omnichain Service enables three additional application patterns:
Cross-chain lending. Developers can build protocols where a user collateralizes an asset on one chain and borrows against it on another — collateralize on Chain A, borrow on Chain B, farm yield, repay, and unlock — without routing funds through intermediate bridges or swaps between steps. The relay layer handles settlement, reducing the number of on-chain transactions and their associated fees.
Omnichain GameFi. Gaming projects can deploy tokens across multiple blockchains and let players from any connected chain transfer assets into the game ecosystem in a single step, expanding the accessible player base without requiring users to migrate to a specific network.
On-chain oracle and derivatives. Derivative and synthetic-asset protocols can access verified price data and chain state from multiple networks, pulling multi-chain information into a single application without relying on off-chain data providers for cross-chain facts.
Omnichain application synchronization. The Omnichain Service also lets projects synchronize state across chains — for example, mirroring a governance decision or a liquidity position update to all connected networks — and execute contract methods on remote chains from a single source transaction.
Security and Audits
Butter Network names CertiK and DeHacker as security partners. The project states that the smart contracts making up the source-chain and relay-chain layers are open-source and have been audited by CertiK, and that the audit reports are intended to allow dApp developers to deploy on top of the infrastructure without repeating security reviews. The documentation also describes exception-handling guarantees: source-chain failures revert immediately, preserving user assets; target-chain failures trigger retry logic before refunding bridge tokens; verification failures block execution entirely before any asset movement occurs.
Ecosystem Relationships
Butter Network is built on top of MAP Protocol, which provides the MAP Relay Chain and the underlying light-client infrastructure for heterogeneous chain interoperability. This relationship means Butter functions as the application and developer layer on top of MAP's base protocol, packaging the relay-chain primitives into developer SDKs, the Omnichain Service API, and the ButterSwap consumer interface.
Wallet integrations include OKX Wallet, TokenPocket, and imToken. The platform is listed on Alchemy's dApp directory as an infrastructure tool.
Team and History
Butter Network does not publicly disclose its founding team. The project's database record lists a March 2023 founding date, though Alchemy's listing references 2021 as the founding year, suggesting development may have begun prior to the official launch. No venture funding rounds or investor names have been publicly confirmed beyond a seed-round reference in partnership announcements.
The documentation was last updated in September 2025, indicating the platform remains under active development and maintenance.
