Solana's Tokenized Gold Market Cap Grew 689% in a Year, Outpacing Every Other Chain
Solana's tokenized gold market cap grew 689% in one year per Birdeye Data, as Oro Finance, Matrixdock, and Streamex bring yield-bearing gold to on-chain.
The market cap of gold and silver tokens on Solana SOL$75.760.0% grew 689.1% in the twelve months through August 2026, averaging 18.8% month-over-month, per Birdeye Data's H1 2026 Solana report, as reported by Crypto Briefing on August 5. That pace ran more than twice the rate of BNB Chain, the next-fastest network, and roughly 4.6 times what Avalanche and Ethereum recorded over the same period.
The growth unfolded during a year in which physical gold crossed $5,000 per ounce for the first time. Bloomberg reported gold topped $5,000 on January 25, driven by geopolitical instability and a retreat from currencies and Treasuries. The metal climbed to a record above $5,500 before pulling back; as of August 6 it trades near $4,240. For on-chain protocols designed to make gold productive rather than just storable, that price run widened the audience from crypto-native traders toward investors seeking a hard-asset hedge that also generates a return.
Three Solana Protocols With Different Market Structures
RWA.xyz tracks the total tokenized commodities market at $4.60 billion as of August 6, with Solana-native protocols among the entries. Oro Finance's GOLD token and Matrixdock's XAUm are the two largest Solana-specific gold products by market cap. A third, Streamex's GLDY, is a regulated security targeting accredited investors.
Oro Finance launched its GOLD token in September 2025 as a yield-bearing tokenized gold product. Each GOLD token represents one troy ounce of physically allocated gold held with Brinks Global in Dubai, audited monthly by RSM. The yield of 3-4% annually comes from gold leasing: the protocol's bankruptcy-remote foundation lends allocated gold to refiners and jewelers who pay to borrow it for inventory funding. Founder Usman Saleem described the mechanism in a May 2026 interview with Solana Media:
Matrixdock, a Singapore-based tokenization platform under Matrixport Group, deployed XAUm on Solana on February 9. Each XAUM token represents one troy ounce of 99.99% pure, LBMA-accredited gold stored in Asian wealth-center vaults. Solana smart contracts were audited by Accretion and Sec3 before launch; initial DeFi liquidity launched on Raydium, with planned expansion into Solana-based lending markets. "With XAUm on Solana, we are extending gold beyond passive ownership into programmable financial infrastructure," said Eva Meng, Head of Matrixdock.
Streamex launched its GLDY gold-linked security in February 2026 and gained round-the-clock secondary trading through Orca DEX in May, per CoinDesk. The structure differs from the other two: GLDY is a regulated security under SEC Regulation D, available only to verified accredited investors, distributed through Siebert Financial, a FINRA-registered broker managing approximately $20 billion in client assets. It pays up to 3.5% annually in additional gold (not cash) by lending physical metal to commercial users including jewelers, mints, and refiners, with custody held by tZERO, a regulated digital-securities platform. Henry McPhie, co-founder and CEO of Streamex, stated at launch: "Our goal has always been to make gold something everyone can own, easily, in whatever form suits them."
The on-chain holder data from Solana Compass shows a clear retail-versus-institutional split between the two largest native tokens:

GOLD's 10,690 holders against XAUm's 487 reflects the product positioning: Oro Finance targets retail distribution while Matrixdock serves institutional counterparties who hold larger positions.
Sovereigns and Banks Enter the Category
Both Bhutan and a major Southeast Asian banking consortium added weight to Solana's tokenized gold footprint in late 2025 and early 2026.
Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City Special Administrative Region launched TER in December 2025, a sovereign gold-backed digital token issued on Solana through DK Bank, Bhutan's first licensed digital financial institution regulated by the Royal Monetary Authority. Each TER represents 0.01 grams of 999.9-purity gold. The government subsequently incorporated TER into its digital nomad visa program, requiring a refundable $10,000 deposit in the token.
In April 2026, OCBC, Lion Global Investors, and DigiFT jointly launched GOLDX, described as Southeast Asia's first on-chain tokenized physical gold fund, with approximately $526 million in assets under management settling across Ethereum and Solana. The involvement of a regulated Singaporean bank alongside an on-chain settlement layer on Solana marked a different order of institutional commitment from the startup protocols that had built the category.
Matrixdock's press release for XAUm noted that the firm's Solana infrastructure had previously supported TER, suggesting the sovereign token helped establish the technical foundation for the follow-on institutional product.
The Risk Embedded in Gold Leasing Yields
The 3-4% yield on GOLD and approximately 3.5% on GLDY are competitive with short-dated investment-grade credit, but each rests on institutional gold leasing arrangements. Leasing routes physical metal through commercial counterparties (refiners, jewelers, mints) who use it to finance inventory. If those counterparties fail to return the metal, the loss lands on the foundation or custodian holding allocated gold on behalf of token holders.
Saleem described the model as delta-neutral in the sense that borrowers hedge their gold exposure, reducing directional price risk. The credit risk from the borrowing relationship remains. Neither Oro Finance nor Streamex publicly discloses the identity or credit quality of their leasing counterparties, and neither has operated through a sustained gold price decline or a period of significantly reduced commercial demand for borrowed metal.
Concentration is a separate factor: three protocols account for the bulk of Solana's tokenized gold market cap. GLDY also remains restricted to accredited investors, limiting how broadly the yield-bearing model can spread at its current regulatory standing.
Context Within Solana's Broader RWA Push
The tokenized gold sector's growth sits inside a wider shift. Solana recorded over $10 billion in tokenized stock volume in June 2026 alone, capturing roughly 95% of on-chain equity trading across all blockchains that month. Tokenized gold is smaller in absolute terms: RWA.xyz tracks the total tokenized commodities market at $4.60 billion, and the chain-level growth rate Birdeye Data measured over the past twelve months outpaced the broader sector average, with gold perpetuals on Solana peaking in May 2026 at $7.19 billion in monthly volume and $21.6 million in month-end open interest.
The combination of a sovereign digital token, a bank-backed fund, and three competing yield-generating protocols points to a category that has moved from speculative positioning into structured financial products. Whether the leasing-based yield model holds through a period of lower gold prices or reduced commercial demand for borrowed metal is the test the sector has yet to face.
