Solana Foundation Launches hackathons.solana.com, a Self-Serve Builder Competition Hub
Solana Foundation launched hackathons.solana.com on September 11, centralizing hackathon discovery, registration, and submission. Stocklana is live with $100K.
The Solana Foundation launched hackathons.solana.com on September 11, a self-serve platform that consolidates the full hackathon lifecycle into one destination. Built by Foundation team members @catmcgee and @0xSrMessi, the platform handles discovery, registration, track selection, project submission, and judging -- tasks that previously required builders to navigate multiple disconnected tools and announcement threads.
The Stocklana hackathon is the first event live on the platform, with $100,000 in prizes and a week remaining on the clock.
One Platform for the Entire Hackathon Flow
The core problem the platform solves is fragmentation. Previous Solana hackathons ran registration on third-party submission platforms, announced tracks on social media, and posted results through separate blog entries. Builders who wanted to participate had to track several independent surfaces to stay current.
@0xSrMessi laid out what the new platform changes: "hackathons.solana.com brings the whole flow into one place: find a hackathon, register, check the tracks and deadlines, build your project and submit it for judging. Teams can sponsor tracks, builders can explore projects in the showcase, and the leaderboard keeps track of participation across hackathons."
The self-serve sponsorship model is the structural change that makes a higher volume of events possible. Teams can fund specific tracks without a custom Foundation coordination process, which means throughput is limited by sponsor appetite rather than platform build capacity. A cross-hackathon leaderboard accumulates participation scores across events, giving builders a persistent record across multiple competitions.
Stocklana Opens First With $100K and a Tokenized-Stock Theme
The first event on the platform takes a direct angle on Solana's tokenized equities activity. Stocklana runs for one week with $100,000 in total prizes and a prompt built around the growing stock-market infrastructure on Solana: "the stock market is open for building."
That timing places Stocklana alongside a broader wave of tokenized-stock activity on the network. Builders working on trading protocols, liquidity infrastructure, or applications that integrate tokenized equities have a funded venue to ship and get judged.
The second slot on the platform is already filled. A Perps and Prediction Markets hackathon, focused on perpetuals and prediction market infrastructure, is scheduled to launch September 18 with another $100,000 prize pool. A third event, themed around Agentic Payments (AI agents transacting through protocols with defined payment channels and spending controls), is in sponsorship formation with a $50,000 target.
Two additional themes are open for community vote on the platform: Tokenized Real-World Assets and Consumer Apps on Solana Mobile. The voting mechanism gives builders a direct channel to influence which problem areas get funded next.
What Solana Hackathons Have Produced Over Five Years
The new platform arrives with a track record behind it. The Solana Foundation has run nine hackathons since November 2020, according to solana.com/hackathon, drawing more than 48,000 developer participants and producing over 3,000 projects. Those participants have since raised more than $600 million in venture funding.
Projects from those rounds span much of Solana's current infrastructure: Stepn, Mango MNGO$0.032-0.6%, Dialect, Solend, Marinade MNDE$0.018-6.3%, Jito JTO$0.437+7.0%, and Tensor TNSR$0.035+3.3% all have hackathon roots. Solana Hyperdrive, the largest individual event in November 2023, drew over 7,000 participants and 907 final project submissions.
That track record matters for builders assessing whether a hackathon is worth their time. Hackathon prizes are one outcome; the signal that judges provide, the team formation that happens during competition, and the visibility to sponsors and investors have historically been the more durable value for serious teams.
The Foundation's move to self-serve infrastructure is an acknowledgment that the past approach of large, infrequent flagship events left capacity on the table. A platform that lets sponsors stand up themed competitions at will means the Foundation can run a continuous calendar of vertically focused events rather than one or two broad multi-track competitions per year.
@joshyote put the ambition plainly at launch: "this bad boy is going to launch so many epic hackathons."
Whether the sponsor pipeline materializes at the rate the platform is designed to support is the open question. The September calendar, with three events in formation within the first week of launch, is an early signal of intent.
