Cerebras falls to post-IPO low as lockup expires and OpenAI picks Nvidia for GPT-6.1 mode
Cerebras Systems (CBRS) shares fell nearly 20% over the week to close Friday, October 2, at $166.43, their lowest level since the AI chipmaker listed on Nasdaq in May, as first reported by CNBC. The stock is now down more than 50% from its post-IPO peak, and its market value has dropped to just over $39 billion from the $95 billion it closed at on its first trading day.
Two things drove the selloff. On Wednesday, research firm SemiAnalysis reported that OpenAI will use Nvidia GPUs rather than Cerebras hardware to power the "Ultrafast" mode of GPT-6.1 Sol. That is a setback for Cerebras' pitch as the main Nvidia alternative for AI inference, even though it signed a deal in January worth more than $10 billion to supply OpenAI with 750 megawatts of compute through 2028. The same day, the IPO lockup expired on about 19.4 million shares, roughly 8% of shares outstanding, held by directors, officers, employees and other shareholders. Insiders were already selling: CEO Andrew Feldman and CTO Sean Lie sold more than $240 million of Class A stock between August 20 and September 25.
