Socket Protocol

Socket Protocol is a chain abstraction and smart-routing infrastructure that enables developers and users to move assets across 50+ blockchains, stablecoins, and payment rails through a single unified API. Founded in 2021, the protocol has processed over $20 billion in cumulative transaction volume and powers integrations for more than 100 protocols including MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, SyncSwap, and Renzo.

What Socket Does

The core problem Socket addresses is fragmentation. Crypto liquidity, users, and assets are siloed across dozens of competing blockchains with incompatible standards. Moving funds between chains typically requires multiple steps — bridging, swapping, managing gas on the destination chain — creating friction that limits developer reach and frustrates users.

Socket's answer is a universal routing engine. Rather than operating its own bridge or custodying funds, Socket sits above the existing bridge and DEX ecosystem, evaluating available routes across providers like Across, Stargate, and Hop, and returning the optimal path for a given transfer based on cost, speed, and security. Developers connect once to Socket's API and gain access to aggregated cross-chain liquidity without managing individual bridge integrations.

The result is a platform that routes not just blockchain-to-blockchain transfers but also stablecoin flows, card payments, local payment rails, and DEX swaps — all from a single integration point.

How MOFA Works

The core technical innovation in Socket's architecture is Modular Order Flow Auctions, or MOFA. Under this model, user intents — requests to move assets or execute actions across chains — are broadcast to an open competitive marketplace where specialized agents bid to fulfill them.

The execution flow operates in layers. A user signs a message off-chain expressing their intent. Watcher agents generate cryptographic proofs of that intent. Transmitter agents then submit those proofs on-chain, where Switchboard contracts handle verification and finalize execution. AppGateway contracts coordinate the full sequence at the application layer, providing a unified interface that abstracts chain-specific differences.

By making the execution layer modular and competitive, MOFA reduces reliance on any single bridge operator and allows dynamic optimization for the user's preferences — best price, fastest settlement, or lowest risk profile. The Switchboard design also lets developers plug in custom verification logic, enabling application-specific security configurations.

Supported Chains and Assets

As of 2026, Socket routes across 50+ blockchain networks. EVM-compatible coverage includes Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, zkSync Era, Linea, and Scroll. Solana support was formally added in Q1 2026, extending Socket's reach into the largest non-EVM ecosystem by transaction volume.

Beyond chain coverage, the platform provides access to 10,000+ tradeable assets and 50+ payment methods spanning crypto wallets, credit cards, centralized exchanges, and local payment rails across 100+ countries. This positions Socket not purely as a DeFi bridging tool but as a generalized payment infrastructure layer.

Integration Options

Socket offers multiple integration surfaces for different use cases:

  • Routing API: Direct REST API access for developers building custom user experiences, with OpenAPI specs provided
  • Socket Widget: An embeddable React component for quick plug-and-play integration
  • Agent Integration Layer: An interface designed for LLM-powered tools that need to execute cross-chain operations autonomously
  • Checkout and Deposit Flows: Enables users to pay or deposit using assets they already hold, regardless of the destination chain's native requirements

Additional developer features include simulated quote filtering to catch reverting transactions before submission, exact output quoting guaranteeing the destination amount rather than the source amount, gasless transaction flows, and deposit address generation for multi-chain deposits. The platform is free for developers and end users.

Token

SOCKET is the protocol's governance token, used for voting on parameter changes, supported bridge additions, and protocol upgrades. As of April 2026, it carried a market capitalization of approximately $72 million. The token does not currently capture transaction fees directly; governance discussions have explored introducing a protocol fee switch, but no such mechanism had been enacted as of that date.

Security History

In January 2024, Socket suffered a $3.3 million exploit. The attack exploited a call injection vulnerability in a newly deployed route module. The performAction function accepted an unvalidated swapExtraData parameter, allowing an attacker to inject a transferFrom call that drained tokens from wallets with unlimited approvals granted to the Socket Gateway contract.

Approximately 700 wallets were affected, with the largest single loss around $657,000. The team disabled the vulnerable route within 14 minutes of identifying the attack. On January 23, 2024, Socket announced the recovery of 1,032 ETH — approximately $2.23 million — of the stolen funds. The incident highlighted a known risk in aggregator architectures: each new external route added to the system expands the attack surface. Socket has since maintained external audit coverage of its contracts, details of which are linked from the official documentation.

Team and Funding

Socket Protocol was founded in 2021 by Rishabh Khurana and Vaibhav Chellani, who previously worked on cross-chain infrastructure at Biconomy. In September 2023, the protocol raised $5 million in a strategic funding round led by Coinbase Ventures and Framework Ventures — two funds with focused cross-chain and wallet-layer investment theses.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Solana's high throughput and low fees make it a natural destination for cross-chain flows, but its non-EVM architecture has historically created a barrier to interoperability with the broader multi-chain ecosystem. Socket's Q1 2026 Solana integration gives Solana-based dApps access to liquidity and users originating on EVM chains, and gives EVM-native users a direct routing path into Solana's DeFi and payments ecosystem.

The agent integration layer is particularly relevant to Solana's emerging AI agent ecosystem. Applications building agentic workflows that need to execute cross-chain payments, swaps, or DeFi operations can use Socket's API to abstract away routing complexity across chain boundaries, enabling agents to operate as if on a single unified network.
