TLDR

Passkeys Wallet is an embedded wallet SDK built by Exodus Movement, Inc. (EXOD) that lets any web application offer a self-custodial crypto wallet without requiring users to install a browser extension or remember a seed phrase. Instead, wallet creation and transaction signing happen through WebAuthn passkeys — the same biometric standards (Face ID, fingerprint) used to unlock smartphones and laptops. The SDK launched in July 2024 and supports Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a range of EVM-compatible chains.

Core Mechanism

The wallet security relies on multi-party computation (MPC). The user private key is never fully assembled in a single location; instead, it is split between the user device and a remote server component. When a transaction is initiated, the user device produces a partial signature using a client key that only decrypts locally during a biometric authentication event. Neither party alone can sign a transaction, making unauthorized access from either end insufficient to move funds.

Because the signing process is tied to a device-bound WebAuthn credential, phishing attacks that redirect users to fake login pages cannot harvest usable credentials — the credential is cryptographically scoped to the originating domain. Spending limits can be configured as an additional safeguard.

Key Features

No seed phrase, no extension. Users create a wallet through a browser popup in a single click. There is nothing to install, back up, or memorize. The wallet appears directly within the host application UI.

Developer SDK. The Passkeys Developer Kit exposes three primary building blocks: a createWallet function that instantiates a new passkey-secured wallet for a user; a WalletProvider React context component that manages wallet state; and a WalletWidget pre-built UI component that drops into any app.

The SDK ships with recipes for Wagmi, RainbowKit, Viem, and the Solana Wallet Adapter, letting developers wire it into existing dApp scaffolding with minimal modification. It also implements EIP-1193 for compatibility with MetaMask-style injected provider detection and the Multi-Injected Provider Discovery (MIPD) standard.

Multi-chain. Supported networks include Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Arbitrum One, Avalanche C-Chain, Base, BNB Chain, Optimism, Astar, Celo, Immutable, Kroma, Mantle, Moonbeam, Rari, and zkSync. A single SDK installation handles wallet creation across all of these.

Customizable branding. The wallet widget accepts custom theme configuration, allowing host applications to present Passkeys infrastructure under their own brand identity.

Tokens and Assets

Passkeys Wallet has no dedicated protocol token. It is a commercial SDK product from a publicly traded company. Exodus Movement itself trades as EXOD on NYSE American, giving the project a level of corporate transparency unusual among crypto developer tools. Revenue comes from transaction fees and SDK licensing rather than token issuance.

Security

No independent smart contract audit has been publicly disclosed for the Passkeys Wallet SDK. The security model relies on the MPC architecture and the underlying WebAuthn standard (FIDO2), both of which have substantial academic and industry validation outside of a dedicated Passkeys-specific audit. MPC itself does not require on-chain smart contracts for its core key management, which limits the attack surface that audit firms typically cover. Developers integrating the SDK should evaluate whether their specific use case warrants additional third-party review.

Team and Background

Passkeys Wallet is a product of Exodus Movement, Inc., headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Exodus was originally known for its multi-chain desktop wallet with a polished consumer interface. It became one of the first crypto companies to list equity on a U.S. stock exchange and maintains a hardware wallet partnership with Trezor. The Passkeys product represents a strategic pivot toward B2B SDK infrastructure, targeting dApp developers who want to lower user onboarding friction without surrendering custody of user funds.

Partnership announcements since the July 2024 launch include an integration with Blockchain.com and a collaboration with M80, an esports organization, to bring a passkey-secured wallet to gaming communities — an audience typically uninterested in seed phrase management.

The Passkeys Foundation GitHub organization maintains a presence but has no public repositories; development proceeds in a private codebase.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Passkeys Wallet addresses the seed-phrase UX problem that has historically limited mainstream Solana adoption. Wallet creation friction — installing Phantom or Solflare, writing down recovery phrases — is a documented drop-off point for new users entering Solana dApps. The Passkeys SDK integrates with the Solana Wallet Adapter, which means any Solana dApp built on standard adapter tooling can enable a passkey-based wallet option alongside existing options.

The timing is also relevant: Solana activated the secp256r1 precompile in June 2025, enabling on-chain verification of P-256 passkey signatures and opening a path toward native on-chain passkey authentication without MPC as an intermediary layer. Passkeys Foundation MPC approach remains a viable implementation strategy, but the ecosystem is developing toward more trust-minimized alternatives simultaneously.

For Solana dApps targeting non-crypto-native audiences — gaming, loyalty programs, consumer finance — the Passkeys SDK offers a drop-in solution that sidesteps the extension install and seed phrase ceremony entirely, lowering the activation cost for first-time crypto users.
