Moemate
Moemate was an AI companion and agent platform launched in October 2023. Users could chat with customizable AI characters, create their own agents, and deploy them across platforms including web, Discord, and Telegram. At its peak the platform reported 6 million users and more than 500,000 community-created AI agents. The platform shut down permanently on February 11, 2025, citing unsustainable GPU and API costs, payment processor restrictions, and infrastructure failures.
What It Was and the Problem It Addressed
Moemate positioned itself as a space for users to build, customize, and interact with AI companions with distinct personalities. Unlike text-only chatbot platforms, Moemate aimed to provide multimodal agents — including voice and avatar capabilities — that could hold long-term conversations and maintain memory of past interactions. Community members could publish their own agents to a shared marketplace, creating a library of AI personas others could use.
Solana Connection
On January 14, 2025, Moemate launched the $MATES token on Solana via a public offering. The token was deployed at contract address MAtesZXcU38mgPuteRFo9ApCauYRRuwn3xf1cs5y7ZX and traded on Raydium. The token was presented as the foundation for a planned on-chain agent economy: future plans included on-chain agent features, staking, and governance. However, these on-chain agent features were never shipped before the platform shut down approximately four weeks after the token launched.
Shutdown
Moemate ceased operations on February 11, 2025 — 28 days after the $MATES token launch. The founders cited three converging pressures: GPU and API costs that grew faster than revenue, payment processor restrictions targeting platforms hosting mature-content AI agents, and infrastructure failures the team could not resolve in time. The $MATES token lost approximately 99% of its value following the shutdown announcement and retained no operational utility without the platform.
Team
The platform was founded by Ahad (founder) and Chris (co-founder). No additional team members or corporate entity information was publicly disclosed. No third-party audits of the Moemate platform or the $MATES token contract have been publicly released.
Historical Context
Moemate launched during a period of rapid growth in AI companion platforms and Solana-based AI agent tokens in late 2024 and early 2025. The $MATES token launch followed the broader AI agent token trend on Solana. The four-week gap between token launch and platform shutdown made Moemate one of the more prominent examples of AI agent platform failures during this cycle. As of mid-2025, no replacement product or relaunch had been announced.
