Moemate

Moemate was an AI companion and agent creation platform developed by Webaverse, Inc. and launched in October 2023. Built for both technical and non-technical users, it offered a no-code environment for building, customizing, and sharing AI-driven virtual characters. The platform allowed creators to deploy agents with distinct personalities, voices, and visual identities, and interact with them through text, voice, and visual modalities. Moemate went offline permanently in February 2025, roughly four weeks after launching the MATES token on Solana.

What Moemate Did

The platform's core offering was a drag-and-drop agent studio that removed the need for programming knowledge. Users could configure AI characters with individual personalities, behavioral profiles, and appearance, then deploy them across multiple channels including X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, and Discord.

Feature set at the time of the MATES launch in January 2025 included:

• Screen and camera vision: Agents could monitor a user's desktop in real time and provide contextual commentary or assistance.
• Voice cloning: Creators could replicate specific voices for their agents.
• Image generation: Agents could produce artwork or visual content as part of interactions.
• Multi-platform deployment: A single agent could maintain a presence simultaneously on social platforms and messaging apps.
• AR/VR and gaming integration: Agents could operate inside augmented reality, virtual reality, and video game environments.
• On-chain and off-chain skills: Agents were capable of executing tasks such as crypto trading alongside conventional productivity functions.
• 100+ language support: The platform handled multilingual interactions natively.

The company positioned Moemate as more accessible than developer-oriented AI agent frameworks like ai16z and Virtuals, which required technical expertise. The stated goal was to let anyone create internet-native AI personalities or practical assistants without writing code.

Traction and Claimed Metrics

By the time of the January 2025 token launch, Moemate's team reported six million registered users, 500,000 community-created agents, and average daily engagement of more than 30 minutes per user. The platform received mentions from TechCrunch and was cited by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in coverage of the emerging AI agent landscape. Independent traffic measurements suggested monthly visits closer to 1.5 million, which was still substantial for an early-stage AI product.

One agent deployed on the platform, Nebula (ticker: $Moe), was promoted as an example of an "internet celebrity" AI character — demonstrating the entertainment and social media use cases the platform was targeting.

The MATES Token on Solana

Webaverse conducted an IDO for the MATES token on January 10–11, 2025, through PAID Network's launchpad. Approximately 130.7 million MATES were sold at $0.00153 per token, raising roughly $200,000. The token launched on Solana on January 14, 2025, with a total supply of 19.5 billion.

Token holders were offered several benefits within the Moemate ecosystem:

• Airdrops of tokens issued by agents that "graduated" to independent launch on the platform
• Priority access to curated project launches within the Moemate network
• Participation in the growing network of AI agents built on the platform's infrastructure

MATES reached a peak price of approximately $0.01269 within days of launch — roughly 8x the IDO price — before the situation changed rapidly.

Alongside the token launch, the team announced Agent Dojo, an incubator initiative developed in partnership with KIPprotocol and AethirCloud. Agent Dojo was intended to fund and accelerate the development of flagship agents and partnership-created agents, expanding the practical capabilities of agents built on Moemate infrastructure.

Shutdown

The Moemate companion app was discontinued in February 2025. On February 11, 2025, the moemate.io domain was pulled by its registrar, taking the platform offline. The development team subsequently confirmed the closure was permanent, citing unsustainable infrastructure economics: GPU and AI model costs had outrun subscription revenue, with payment processing friction contributing to the cash flow problem.

No official post-mortem was published. The shutdown came approximately four weeks after the MATES token launch and raised significant controversy, particularly because token buyers had invested based on expectations of continued platform development. User data — including chat histories, custom characters, voice clones, and generated artwork — was permanently deleted. Refunds were limited to users who had paid on or after January 3, 2025.

A Moemate Exporter tool was made available from April to May 2025 for users to recover some data, but that channel later became unavailable as well.

Token Aftermath

As of mid-2026, MATES continues to trade at near-zero value. The token had declined approximately 99.3% from its IDO price, with roughly $40,000 in pooled liquidity remaining across Raydium and Orca on Solana. The moemate.io and moemate.com domains no longer resolve, and no successor product or revived platform has launched.

Background

Webaverse, Inc. was co-founded by Ahad Shams and Chris Larkin. The company had previously been focused on metaverse products before pivoting to AI companions. In early 2023, Webaverse disclosed a widely reported incident in which $4 million was stolen from the company during a meeting.

The AI companion pivot produced Moemate, which gained meaningful user traction before the platform's financial model broke down. The subsequent crypto pivot — introducing MATES as an ecosystem token on Solana — preceded the platform's permanent closure by less than a month.

Status: Inactive. The Moemate platform is permanently shut down. The MATES token remains on-chain but has no active development team, product, or roadmap behind it.
