What It Is and the Problem It Solves

Codex — the API platform behind the well-known Defined trading terminal at defined.fi — exists to solve a fundamental infrastructure problem in crypto: raw blockchain data is fast and trustless, but it is also incomplete and difficult to consume. On-chain transactions carry no USD prices, no aggregated volume figures, no holder counts, and no signal about whether a token is trending or a scam. Developers who wanted that enriched picture historically had to build and maintain custom indexing pipelines, a significant ongoing cost in engineering time and reliability work.

Codex eliminates that burden. It is a GraphQL API that ingests on-chain events across 80+ networks in under one second, enriches them with USD pricing, aggregated metrics, holder data, and security signals, and exposes the result through queries, WebSocket subscriptions, and webhook notifications. The goal is for any developer — from an indie bot builder to a publicly traded exchange — to plug into the same data layer that powers the Defined trading interface without having to run a single indexer.

Origins and Background

The company, incorporated as Codex Data Inc., was founded in late 2020 by a Canadian team including Mike Rowe (CEO), Matt Fikowski, Derek Binnersley, Nathan Lambert, and Braden Simpson. The founders were active on-chain traders who were frustrated that the available charting and data tools could not keep up with the pace of DeFi, particularly for newly launched tokens on DEXes that existed nowhere in traditional data feeds. Their response was to build Defined.fi, a trading analytics dashboard that launched in 2021 and quickly attracted a large following among professional traders.

To power Defined with the speed and accuracy they needed, the team built their own indexing and enrichment backend. That backend became Codex. After Defined scaled to serve over 500 million API requests per month and demonstrated the data layer was production-grade, the team opened Codex as a standalone product for external developers. Defined itself is now positioned as both a consumer product for traders and a live demonstration of what the Codex API can do. The company raised $2.5 million in seed funding, backed in part through Alliance DAO.

Core Mechanism

Codex operates as a GraphQL API, allowing developers to compose precise queries rather than over-fetching from generic REST endpoints. The three access patterns are:

Queries provide single-request data retrieval with sub-second response times, covering token prices, OHLCV candles, holder rankings, wallet balances, and pair metadata.

WebSocket subscriptions are persistent connections that push live price updates and trade events without polling, with a stated 99.9% uptime. This is the mechanism used by latency-sensitive trading bots and alert systems.

Webhooks are server-side event notifications for backend integrations, allowing applications to react to on-chain events such as a new token launch or a large trade.

The enrichment layer is what differentiates Codex from direct RPC or subgraph access. Raw blockchain events arrive on Codex indexers within a second of on-chain confirmation; the platform then attaches USD prices derived from DEX liquidity pools, computes aggregated statistics (volume, unique wallets, liquidity depth), identifies holder distribution, and applies scam-filtering signals before the data becomes queryable.

Key Products and Features

The Codex API is the core B2B product. It supports queries for up to 25 tokens per request for price data, OHLCV candles from 1-second to 7-day granularity, holder analysis including ranked wallet lists and supply concentration metrics, and pair-level data covering the trading activity of any DEX pair. The platform currently indexes 70 million or more tokens and tracks 700 million wallets.

Defined.fi is the consumer trading terminal built entirely on the Codex API. It has more than 250,000 monthly active users and hosts over 10,000 Telegram channels using the Defined Bot for price alerts and trending signals. Defined serves as the public proof-of-concept for Codex's accuracy and latency: if a new memecoin appears on Pump.fun, it shows up in Defined (and therefore in Codex) within seconds.

The Trending Algorithm surfaces new tokens gaining traction based on volume, wallet growth, and liquidity signals. This is particularly relevant in the Solana memecoin context, where tokens can go from zero to significant liquidity in minutes.

Scam Filtering applies heuristics to flag likely fraudulent tokens, a feature requested by downstream builders who do not want to display scam assets alongside legitimate projects.

AI and Agent Integration: Codex offers three paths for AI agent access — Codex Skills for direct agent integration, a Docs MCP server, and keyless pay-per-request access — reflecting the growing use of blockchain data APIs in LLM-powered trading and research applications.

Solana Support

Solana is a first-class network on Codex. The platform provides complete coverage of the Solana memecoin and launchpad ecosystem, with specific support for Pump.fun (real-time indexing of token launches and trade events), LaunchLab by Raydium (monitoring of new token graduation events), and Meteora (pair data and liquidity analytics).

Solana is identified by network ID 1399811149 in the API. Developers can subscribe to new pair creation events, live price feeds, and trade-by-trade activity across all major Solana DEXes. The getBars query returns TradingView-compatible OHLCV data; TradingView itself is a Codex customer for crypto chart data.

Pricing and Access

Codex offers three tiers. The Free plan provides 10,000 requests per month at up to 5 requests per second, suitable for prototyping and small personal projects. The Growth plan costs $350 per month and includes 1 million requests per month, 300 requests per second, five API keys, WebSocket access, and webhook support; overages are billed at $350 per additional million requests. Enterprise plans are custom-priced with unlimited throughput, dedicated support, and custom SLAs. A GraphQL Explorer is available at dashboard.codex.io for testing queries without writing code.

Notable Customers

Codex's customer list includes Coinbase, Uniswap, TradingView, Magic Eden, Farcaster, Rainbow Wallet, and MoonPay. The presence of both a major centralized exchange (Coinbase) and the leading Solana NFT marketplace (Magic Eden) illustrates the breadth of use cases, from exchange-level data requirements to NFT and DeFi wallet enrichment.

Fit Within the Solana Ecosystem

Codex occupies the data infrastructure layer of Solana. It does not issue tokens, manage liquidity, or operate a DEX; instead it makes every other Solana application more capable by providing the enriched, real-time data layer that raw RPC nodes do not supply. For Solana specifically, where new tokens launch by the thousands each day and meme-driven trading cycles are measured in minutes, the low-latency indexing of launchpads and the sub-second WebSocket streaming are particularly high-value. The Defined trading terminal also serves as one of the most actively used on-chain data products in the Solana community, making Codex both the silent infrastructure partner and the visible research tool for a significant share of active Solana traders.
