Solana Agave v4.2 to Halve Slot Times, Cut Rent 90%, and Triple Transaction Size
Anza's Agave v4.2 activates starting August 17, halving slot times to 200ms, cutting rent 90%, and raising the max transaction size from 1,232 to 4,096 bytes.
Anza Anza has published the release overview for Agave v4.2, the Solana validator client upgrade that targets mainnet feature activations starting the week of August 17, 2026. The release delivers three substantive changes at once: slot times cut from 400ms to 200ms, rent costs reduced by 90%, and the maximum transaction size raised from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes.
On July 27, Anza CEO Brennan Watt linked to the release overview with a simple forecast: "epoch 1009 forecast: raining blockspace โ๏ธโ๏ธ."
Slot Times Cut to 200ms in Four Staged Steps
The move from 400ms to 200ms slots is implemented via SIMD-0525 in four separate 50ms decrements, each gated by its own feature activation. The staged approach lets the network pause at any step if block skip rates rise above acceptable thresholds rather than forcing a single large cut that validators have no recovery path from.
At 200ms, applications built around Solana's current 400ms confirmation cycle will see latency roughly halved without code changes. The change also sets the groundwork for Alpenglow, Anza's planned consensus protocol replacement targeting approximately 150ms finality, which is scheduled for Agave v4.3 in October 2026.
Rent Drops from $0.159 to $0.0159 per SPL Token Account
The rent mechanism change sets the lamports_per_byte constant from 6,960 to 696, a 90% reduction. For a standard SPL token account, the rent-exempt deposit, paid in SOL, falls from approximately $0.159 to $0.0159. Like the slot changes, this is phased across five independent feature gates so each step can be monitored and paused if needed.
The impact is largest for protocols that create many accounts at scale. DeFi platforms managing pools, margin books, or on-chain order state pay this cost at every account creation. At one-tenth the prior cost, account-intensive architectures become meaningfully cheaper to deploy and maintain.
Transaction Size Limit Rises to 4,096 Bytes
The maximum transaction size increases from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes with the introduction of the transaction v1 format. The 1,232-byte ceiling has forced ZK proof submissions, complex multisigs, and large batched instruction sets to split across multiple transactions. The v1 format handles these atomically.
100M CU Blocks Activate July 29 Under a Separate Gate
A related but distinct upgrade is activating on mainnet on July 29, 2026: the 100M compute unit block limit, controlled by feature gate P1BCUMpAC7V2GRBRiJCNUgpMyWZhoqt3LKo712ePqsz. The current per-block limit is 60M CU; the new cap is 100M CU, a 67% increase in per-block capacity.
This gate's activation was made possible by XDP networking (which processes packets at the kernel level, bypassing standard Linux networking overhead) reaching supermajority stake adoption. Agave v4.2 makes XDP the default for validators running the Agave client; it was previously opt-in. The 100M CU blocks feature was already live on testnet and devnet before mainnet activation. Solana processed more than 130 million user transactions per day on average over the trailing week, per Solana Compass analytics, with July 27 logging 155 million.
Activation Schedule and What Validators Need to Do
Feature gates do not activate simultaneously. Starting the week of August 17 (epoch 1009), activations roll out one per epoch โ roughly every two days โ following the Agave v4.2 upgrade candidate, which launched on devnet in July 2026 for initial testing.
Validators must be running Agave v4.2 before the first gate activates on mainnet-beta. Anza has been shipping on roughly a six-week cadence: Agave 4.1, which landed in late June and shipped BLS pubkeys and Validator Address Table components in preparation for Alpenglow, preceded this release on that schedule.
The three feature areas in v4.2 (slot timing, rent, and transaction size) each activate through their own gate sequences and can each be individually halted if network health metrics flag a problem.
