Pulse

Pulse was a Solana-based decentralized science (DeSci) and decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) startup building a health-tracking wristband designed to give users sovereign control over their biometric data — and to monetize that data through researcher partnerships rather than corporate surveillance. The project shut down in April 2026 due to an inability to raise sufficient capital to scale hardware manufacturing at the pace the market required.

What Pulse Was

Founded in October 2023 under the tagline "Break Your Limits," Pulse entered the wearables market positioning itself against incumbents like Whoop and Oura. Its core device was a wrist-worn fitness tracker that continuously monitored heart rate variability, blood-oxygen saturation, sleep quality, VO2 max, and calories burned. An accompanying mobile app aggregated that raw biometric data, combined it with blood work and DNA records if users chose to upload them, and compiled a unified profile the project called an on-chain digital twin.

The key distinction from conventional wearables was data ownership. Traditional competitors monetize users' health information by licensing it to insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and other third parties without compensating the users who generated it. Pulse inverted that model: users retained control of their profiles and could selectively share data with researchers or professionals they chose, earning crypto rewards in exchange.

How It Worked

Pulse's backend relied on blockchain-based Decentralized Confidential Computing (DeCC) techniques — specifically Multi-Party Computation (MPC) and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) — to process sensitive health information without exposing raw data to third parties or Pulse itself during computation. This meant a researcher querying aggregate health trends across the network could receive statistically valid results without ever accessing any individual's underlying records.

The wearable device contained a built-in digital wallet, enabling on-chain transactions directly tied to a user's health activity without routing through a separate mobile wallet. AI-powered insights drawn from the aggregated biometric data were delivered via the app to give users actionable wellness recommendations.

Pulse operated on Solana, chosen for its throughput and low transaction costs — both important for a network that would need to process continuous health data streams from thousands of simultaneous devices.

Key Milestone: The pump.science Partnership

In December 2024, Pulse and pump.science — a gamified longevity research platform also built on Solana — announced what they described as the first on-chain controlled study powered by a wearable device. Several hundred participants wore Pulse devices while testing a pump.science supplement. The wearables continuously streamed biometric readings to pump.science's platform, making the study results visible to researchers and community members in real time as the trial progressed.

The collaboration was intended to demonstrate Pulse's core value proposition at scale: transparent, participant-compensated, blockchain-anchored medical research that could eventually replace opaque, institutional-controlled trials. It was the project's most concrete proof-of-concept of how DeSci and DePIN could be combined in a health context.

Funding and Backing

Pulse raised $1.8 million in pre-seed funding, led by Collab Currency and Lemniscap, with participation from Delphi Ventures and Lattice. Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, joined as an angel investor — a notable endorsement that helped the project gain visibility in the Solana ecosystem. Device pre-orders reportedly sold out across five successive batches, suggesting meaningful early consumer interest in the data-ownership pitch.

Despite this early traction, the pre-seed round proved insufficient for sustained hardware development. Wearable manufacturing requires capital-intensive upfront investment in tooling, production runs, firmware development, regulatory compliance, and supply chains — cost structures fundamentally different from software protocols. Pulse's fundraising did not keep pace with those demands.

Shutdown

Pulse announced its discontinuation in April 2026, citing an inability to scale due to a lack of capital. Venture capital attention had shifted away from hardware DePIN projects toward AI and token-based software protocols during 2024–2025, closing off follow-on fundraising pathways. The team explored an AI integration pivot but found that grafting AI capabilities onto a stalling hardware business was not a viable path forward.

Users were directed to migrate their health data and transition to JStylePro, an app operated by Pulse's original OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partner, JStyle. A data export window was provided at pulse.site/export, with a hard deadline of May 14, 2026, after which historical health data would be permanently unavailable through Pulse's systems. The main domain, pulse.site, is no longer accessible as of the project's closure.

Ecosystem Fit and Broader Context

Pulse occupied a real gap in Solana's DeSci ecosystem. The concept — user-owned health data, researcher marketplaces, on-chain study infrastructure — mapped coherently onto DeSci's broader goals, and the pump.science collaboration showed that executing on that vision was technically feasible. The failure was a capital and market timing problem, not a product design flaw.

The project's trajectory reflects a recurring challenge for hardware DePIN initiatives: the economics of building physical devices require sustained, patient capital that the current crypto funding cycle has not consistently provided. Pulse sold devices, attracted credible investors, executed a real research partnership, and still could not bridge the gap between early excitement and the capital needed for manufacturing at scale.

Pulse is no longer operational. No token was publicly launched. Users who held data on the platform were advised to migrate before the May 2026 deadline.
