Nyan Heroes

Nyan Heroes was a free-to-play, team-based third-person hero shooter built on the Solana blockchain, developed by 9 Lives Interactive (formerly Rude Robot Studios). Set in a futuristic world called Nekovia — a civilization dominated by anthropomorphic cats — the game asked players to pilot giant mech suits called Guardians while competing in arena-based objective matches. The project attracted significant early traction before shutting down in May 2025 after its developers were unable to secure the funding required to bring the game to a full commercial release.

Concept and Setting

Nyan Heroes positioned itself at the intersection of mainstream game design and blockchain ownership. Rather than building a game around crypto mechanics first, the studio aimed to create a shooter that stood on its own merits while layering optional Web3 features for players who wanted them. The game was built using Unreal Engine 5 and was distributed through the Epic Games Store and planned for Steam, lowering the barrier to entry by allowing players to access it without any cryptocurrency wallet or blockchain knowledge.

The setting — a subterranean city called New Nekovia, reconstructed after an unspecified catastrophe — provided a stylized arena environment for competitive play. The name "Nyan" references the Japanese word for a cat's meow, anchoring the game's cat-centric aesthetic throughout its branding, characters, and mechanics.

Gameplay Mechanics

Players chose a mech suit class — variants included Assassin, Medic, Warrior, and Sniper roles — each with distinct abilities, weapons, and playstyles. Teams competed on objective-based maps, with tactical class composition central to winning.

A defining mechanic set Nyan Heroes apart from typical shooters: when a Guardian mech took critical damage, the pilot cat ejected and became exposed on the battlefield as a small, fast, but vulnerable unit. During this window, the cat could use feline-specific movement abilities — wall running, wall climbing, super jumps, and air-dashing — to survive long enough for the mech to respawn. This dual-state design rewarded skilled players who could navigate the battlefield in cat form while remaining a viable target for opponents.

Mech customization extended to loadout selection across six weapon types and a mod system, giving players room to optimize for different roles and map conditions.

Blockchain Integration and Token Economy

Nyan Heroes used a two-currency economy to keep blockchain features optional while providing on-chain ownership for engaged players.

Catnip (CTNP) was a non-blockchain in-game currency earned through gameplay and used to purchase cosmetics, boosts, and character unlocks. It functioned like a conventional premium currency and required no wallet interaction.

NYAN was the project's native Solana-based token, launched on May 21, 2024 on Bybit and other exchanges. NYAN holders could participate in governance, pay marketplace transaction fees, enter competitions, stake for rewards, and "awaken" in-game items — a process that minted those items as NFTs and unlocked an additional rewards pathway. The dual-currency design was deliberate: NYAN gave on-chain enthusiasts a meaningful economic layer without forcing it on mainstream players.

Prior to the NYAN token launch, 9 Lives Interactive ran play-to-airdrop campaigns where players accumulated MEOW and CATNIP points during playtests to earn NYAN token allocations, using early gameplay engagement to build its initial token holder base.

NFTs and Genesis Assets

The project's NFT layer predated the token by several years. Genesis Nyan NFTs went on presale in October 2021, shortly after the project's August 2021 announcement. These early-access assets provided holders with beta access, staking rewards, in-game purchase benefits, and exclusive merchandise. Genesis NFT holders were positioned as the project's core community and early financial backers.

The "awakening" system allowed players to convert in-game items into on-chain NFTs by spending NYAN tokens, creating a pathway from traditional gameplay engagement to verifiable digital ownership.

Team and Funding

9 Lives Interactive was co-founded by CEO Max Fu and co-founder and advisor Wendy "Wengie" Huang. The studio assembled a team of industry veterans with backgrounds at EA, Bungie, and Ubisoft, and listed senior advisors with experience at Riot Games and Twitch. The development team's credits spanned major franchises including Halo, Destiny, Fortnite, Marvel's Avengers, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six.

The studio raised $3 million in a single funding round led by Mechanism Capital, with participation from Delphi Digital, Sfermion, 3Commas Capital, Momentum 6, Kosmos Ventures, Devmons GG, and CSP DAO.

Traction and Playtests

Over its development period, Nyan Heroes completed four public playtests and built a substantial audience without a full commercial release. More than one million players participated across these playtests. On the Epic Games Store, the pre-alpha build reached the top 30 titles by downloads, recording over 200,000 downloads. Combined wishlists on Steam and the Epic Games Store surpassed 250,000.

The final playtest ran from March 26 to April 13, 2025, and distributed 6.7 million NYAN tokens as player rewards.

Shutdown

On May 16–17, 2025, 9 Lives Interactive announced it was ceasing development. The studio stated it had explored publishing deals, investment rounds, grants, and acquisition offers but could not secure the capital needed to complete and commercially launch the game. The most recent playtest build had not driven sufficient player retention to attract investors.

CEO Max Fu acknowledged the team was exploring potential acquisition of the studio or its intellectual property: "We are collectively heartbroken that we won't be able to bring our cat-inspired universe to completion." As of the announcement, discussions with potential acquirers were ongoing but unresolved.

The NYAN token lost approximately 40% of its value on the day of the announcement and continued to decline, reaching roughly $0.006 — down approximately 98.5% from its all-time high of $0.45 reached in May 2024. Genesis Cat NFTs dropped around 70% in floor price on Magic Eden. Community channels were subsequently disabled, and the official domain became unreachable.

Solana Ecosystem Role

Nyan Heroes represented one of the more ambitious attempts to bring a mainstream-quality shooter to the Solana ecosystem. Its development timeline coincided with a broader wave of Solana-based gaming projects that sought to attract non-crypto gaming audiences by distributing through conventional platforms like the Epic Games Store. The game's decision to make blockchain interaction optional reflected a strategy common among Solana gaming projects of its era — use the chain for asset ownership and token incentives without gating access behind wallet requirements.

The project's closure in May 2025, despite achieving meaningful player numbers and critical mass on wishlists, became a cited example of the funding challenges facing Web3 gaming studios that built extensive playtesting infrastructure before reaching commercial viability.
