DARK

DARK implements a trusted execution environment (TEE) for for Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers that automatically integrates new tools into AI systems, enabling continuous capability expansion and performance improvement without manual intervention.

About

Dark Research

Dark Research (trading as "Dark") is an applied AI lab on Solana that combines Trusted Execution Environments and Model Context Protocols to run privacy-preserving AI agents, with DARK Games — a competitive gaming universe for autonomous AI — as its first live application.

What It Does

Dark describes itself as "a technology company dedicated to closing the gap between frontier technology and human cognition through production applications." It operates at the intersection of blockchain infrastructure and artificial intelligence, arguing the two fields share similar structural limitations and similar long-term potential. The project launched in April 2025, founded by Edgar Pavlovsky, a former co-founder of Marginfi (a Solana lending protocol) and designer of Paladin, an anti-MEV system on Solana.

The company's core thesis is that both blockchain and AI systems today suffer from opacity and trust deficits. Its answer is a layered technical stack that enforces verifiable privacy at the hardware level while exposing AI agents to rich external data and services through a standardized protocol layer.

How It Works

Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) sit at the foundation. TEEs are hardware-isolated computing enclaves — available on modern processors — where code executes in a secure context that even the host machine operator cannot inspect or tamper with. Dark runs its AI agents inside TEEs so that node operators process user data without being able to read or modify it. This is positioned as the privacy primitive the AI industry lacks: inference that is both verifiable and confidential.

Model Context Protocols (MCPs) sit above the TEE layer. MCP is an open standard proposed by Anthropic in late 2024 that gives AI models a standardized interface to external data sources, APIs, and execution environments — bidirectional, dynamic, and composable. Dark builds its own MCP servers (currently a Dark Forest MCP and a Solana MCP, both on GitHub) and offers MCP hosting as a service for third-party developers. The combination of TEE execution and MCP data access allows AI agents to act on real-time information — wallet balances, on-chain state, game coordinates — without any single party having full visibility into the agent's internal reasoning.

Solana provides the settlement and coordination layer. The network's throughput and low transaction costs make it practical to issue micropayments to node operators and reward participants at the frequency that agent-driven gameplay requires.

Products

DARK Games / Dark Forest is the flagship application, launched within one week of the project's public debut. It is a competitive gaming universe inspired by the on-chain strategy game Dark Forest, which features fog-of-war mechanics — incomplete information that requires inference and strategy rather than brute force. In Dark's version, autonomous AI agents running inside TEEs compete against each other. Users participate not by playing directly, but by contributing intelligence: staking $DARK tokens to supply coordinates, routes, and strategic suggestions to agents. If a user's suggestions prove effective, they earn $DARK rewards; ineffective suggestions result in lost stakes. This creates an information market layered on top of the game.

SPUTNIK is the first AI agent deployed in the DARK Games universe, announced in April 2025. It uses MCP augmentation to autonomously explore the Dark Forest environment — locating target planets, accumulating energy, and completing objectives under incomplete-information conditions. Users can assist SPUTNIK with specific tasks in exchange for $DARK rewards. The team describes SPUTNIK as "a first of its kind — an MCP-augmented gaming AI."

MCP Hosting Infrastructure is the enterprise-facing product. Dark offers developers the ability to host MCP servers on its TEE infrastructure, targeting use cases that require private AI inference: Solana DeFi applications, DePIN integrations, and enterprise private compute. A waitlist is available on the website.

Open-Source Activity

Dark's GitHub organization (github.com/darkresearch) hosts several active repositories. Pinned projects include generative-ui (TypeScript tooling and templates for generative UI applications, 167 stars), mallory (a React Native crypto-plus-AI chat boilerplate with embedded wallet support, 52 stars), and fireteam (Python, early-stage). The solana-mcp repository is a functional MCP server for Solana blockchain interaction. Additional repositories cover infinite-context memory tooling and Dialect MCP integrations. Licensing is MIT throughout.

$DARK Token

$DARK is a native Solana SPL token with a total supply of approximately 999.96 million, fully circulating at launch with no unlock schedule. Contract address: 8BtoThi2ZoXnF7QQK1Wjmh2JuBw9FjVvhnGMVZ2vpump. The token trades on Raydium.

Token utility spans three areas: payment for compute resources on the Dark infrastructure network, rewards for TEE node operators who process inference requests, and the staking mechanism inside DARK Games that gives users skin in agent outcomes. Governance use is mentioned as a potential future role.

The token's price history reflects the high volatility characteristic of newly launched Solana ecosystem tokens. $DARK reached a market cap above $30 million within its first week of public trading. Binance Alpha listed the token but removed it in a December 2025 batch delisting alongside eight other tokens — a setback that, combined with broader market conditions, contributed to a significant decline from peak levels. Holder concentration is notable, with the top 20 addresses holding approximately 56% of supply at launch.

Team and Backing

Edgar Pavlovsky is the publicly identified founder. His prior work on Marginfi and Paladin gives him deep roots in the Solana builder community; he is also a member of MtnDAO, a Solana-native hacker collective. The remainder of the team operates under pseudonyms. No institutional venture backing has been confirmed in independent reporting. The project describes itself as "a nimble team" building in public.

Ecosystem Fit

Dark positions itself in the emerging category of AI agent infrastructure on Solana — a space that has drawn significant developer and speculative interest as autonomous agents become more capable and as demand for verifiable, private compute grows. By combining TEE hardware guarantees with MCP's composability standard, Dark is attempting to provide plumbing that other AI agent projects on Solana could build on top of, not just a standalone product. The DARK Games application serves as both a live demonstration of the infrastructure's capabilities and an entertainment-driven user acquisition mechanism.
