Tokocrypto

Tokocrypto is Indonesia's first and longest-standing government-registered cryptocurrency exchange, combining a regulated centralized trading platform with a native utility token (TKO) that extends into decentralized finance and NFT services.

Background and Founding

Tokocrypto was conceived in June 2017 and officially launched in September 2018 by co-founders Pang Xue Kai (CEO) and Teguh Kurniawan Harmanda (COO), alongside Nanda Ivens (CMO) and Lai Chung Ying (CSO). The platform was purpose-built for the Indonesian market, offering fiat on/off ramps denominated in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) at a time when access to digital assets in Southeast Asia was still nascent.

In November 2019, Tokocrypto became the first Indonesian entity to receive registration under BAPPEBTI, the Ministry of Trade's Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, making it the country's first formally licensed crypto exchange. Binance made a strategic investment in 2020, providing both capital and infrastructure through Binance Cloud technology. Binance subsequently increased its stake and acquired the company outright, while Tokocrypto continues to operate under its own brand and leadership as a distinct entity. In 2025, Calvin Kizana was appointed CEO, bringing a background in Indonesian tech startups.

Core Mechanism and Platform

Tokocrypto operates as a centralized exchange (CEX) running on Binance Cloud infrastructure, which provides institutional-grade matching engines, liquidity, and security tooling. Users can buy, sell, and trade digital assets against IDR or crypto-to-crypto pairs. The platform describes its core user experience through three Indonesian-language values: Mudah (Easy), Cepat (Fast), and Aman (Secure), emphasizing accessibility for retail investors in Indonesia.

Key platform features include:

  • Spot trading: Over 400 cryptocurrency pairs with fiat IDR on/off ramps
  • Zero-fee fiat conversions: Buy/sell service for converting IDR to crypto at no trading fee
  • OTC Trading: Over-the-counter desk for larger block trades
  • Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA): Automated recurring purchase tool
  • Staking: On-platform staking for select assets
  • TKO Lock: Token-locking mechanism tied to platform rewards
  • Reward Hub: Incentive and loyalty program for active users
  • VIP/Prestige Program: Premium tier for high-volume traders
  • API trading: Programmatic access for algorithmic traders
  • Mobile app: Available on iOS and Android

The platform integrates with TradingView for charting and is connected to CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko for market data. BIDR, a 1:1 IDR-pegged stablecoin, is supported natively to facilitate DeFi participation.

TKO Token

TKO (Toko Token) is the native utility token of the Tokocrypto ecosystem. It is a BEP-20 token issued on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC). TKO launched via Binance Launchpad in April 2021 and was positioned as the first local Indonesian cryptocurrency project to offer a hybrid token model combining CeFi and DeFi utilities.

CeFi benefits include discounted trading fees on Tokocrypto, access to exclusive Launchdrop campaigns, TKO Megadrop promotions, airdrops, and merchandise redemption. DeFi benefits include access to Farming Pools, the TKO NFT Arcade marketplace for non-fungible tokens, lending and swap functions, and integration with BIDR for DeFi participation.

The TKO Foundation, established as a separate and independent entity from Tokocrypto the exchange, manages TKO token strategy and ecosystem development. A dedicated litepaper (v2.0) and token site at tkotoken.com govern public communications about the token.

From January to September 2024, 3,347,261 TKO were burned, reducing total supply progressively below the 500 million cap. Total supply is capped at 500 million TKO, with approximately 171.7 million TKO circulating as of mid-2026 (roughly 34% of max supply). As of August 2026, TKO trades near $0.052 with a market capitalization of approximately $9 million, well below its December 2024 peak of roughly $107 million. A quarterly burn program — updated to allocate up to 50% of crypto-to-crypto trading revenue toward burns (up from 10%) — has completed confirmed burns through Q1 2026.

Scale and Growth

As of 2024, Tokocrypto reported a user base exceeding 4 million accounts, growing to 4.5 million by mid-2025. Trading volume in 2024 reached Rp650.61 trillion (approximately $40 billion USD at prevailing exchange rates), a 335.91% year-over-year increase. The platform supports approximately 359 tradable assets across multiple cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and altcoins.

For 2025, Tokocrypto reported total transaction volume of Rp50 trillion, with the exchange operating 24/7 customer support and maintaining its position as Indonesia's leading regulated platform.

Regulatory and Security Status

Tokocrypto holds multiple regulatory credentials relevant to Indonesia's evolving digital asset framework:

  • BAPPEBTI registration (November 2019): First Indonesian exchange to achieve this status
  • OJK supervision: Supervised by the Financial Services Authority following its expanded mandate over crypto assets
  • ISO 27001 and ISO 27017 certification: Information security management standards verified through BSI
  • Government registration: Registered with Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Ministry of Commerce
  • Industry membership: Member of the Indonesian Blockchain Association and Indonesia Fintech Association

Fit in the Broader Crypto Ecosystem

Tokocrypto is the dominant Binance-affiliated exchange serving Southeast Asia's largest economy and one of the world's most populous crypto markets. Indonesia's crypto investor base reached 22.91 million people in 2024, growing 23.77% year-over-year, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally.

The TKO token itself runs on BNB Smart Chain, not Solana. However, Tokocrypto lists Solana (SOL) as a tradeable asset against IDR, and has listed Solana-ecosystem tokens such as SOON Network ($SOON) with dedicated trading pairs. The platform functions as a key fiat gateway for Indonesian retail investors seeking exposure to cross-chain digital assets including Solana-native projects. Tokocrypto's planned expansion into Web3 wallet integration and DeFi protocol collaborations positions it as a cross-chain bridge between Indonesian retail capital and decentralized ecosystems.
