Roughrider Coin, Bank of North Dakota's dollar-backed stablecoin on Solana, is live on Fiserv's digital asset platform for 90+ state banks and credit unions.

North Dakota's Roughrider Coin Goes Live on Solana as Fiserv Opens Its Digital Asset Platform to Banks
The outline of North Dakota cut from a U.S. dollar bill, dotted with gold pins linked by fine threads, on a dark nautical chart with the Fiserv and Solana logos.

Roughrider Coin, the dollar-backed stablecoin that Bank of North Dakota announced with Fiserv a year ago, is now live on Solana. Fiserv said on 1 October 2026 that its digital asset platform is live with financial institution clients and that Roughrider Coin is the platform's "first live use case." More than 90 banks and credit unions in North Dakota can now reach the coin through Commercial Center, Fiserv's existing commercial online banking system, and use it to move money across the state's interbank network, with transactions processed on Solana.

The go-live completes a plan first made public in October 2025, when Decrypt reported that Roughrider Coin was scheduled to debut in 2026. VersaBank, the bank that issues the coin, confirmed in its own 1 October release that Roughrider Coin "is now live."

How the North Dakota stablecoin works: Fiserv, VersaBank, Fireblocks and Solana

Roughrider Coin splits the job of running a bank stablecoin across four parties. Bank of North Dakota sponsors the coin, Fiserv supplies the platform and the banking front end, VersaBank issues it, and Fireblocks provides the digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services, according to the Fiserv release. Solana is the ledger the transactions settle on.

VersaBank's role covers minting, burning, custody and reserve asset management, per both releases. In plain terms, VersaBank creates new coins when dollars come in, destroys them when dollars go out, and holds the reserves backing them. The Canadian bank does this work through its U.S. subsidiary, VersaBank USA, N.A., and describes its underlying technology as its proprietary "Real Bank Tokenized Deposits," according to the VersaBank release.

The design choice that matters most for adoption is the front end. Fiserv put the coin inside Commercial Center, software participating banks already use for commercial banking, so a small North Dakota credit union reaches Roughrider Coin through a screen its staff already know, with no separate wallet or custody setup to run. That is how more than 90 institutions in one state are on the same settlement rail on day one.

Bank of North Dakota is the nation's only state-owned bank, chartered in 1919, as the VersaBank release notes. Its CEO, Don Morgan, framed the launch around that history in the Fiserv release: "Launching Roughrider Coin with Fiserv builds on that legacy by giving our partner community banks and credit unions a new tool to move money more efficiently across North Dakota's interbank network."

Fiserv Digital Asset Platform use cases: cards, cross-border and tokenized deposits

Roughrider Coin is the first live use case of a broader Fiserv Digital Asset Platform. The Fiserv release lists the other use cases it supports: stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, treasury automation, tokenized deposits and global currency account services.

"By moving from concept to production with leading institutions, we are helping clients unlock new efficiencies in banking and payments while maintaining the trust, security and regulatory standards they expect," said Sunil Sachdev, Fiserv's Head of Embedded Finance and Digital Assets.

VersaBank founder and president David Taylor said in the Fiserv release that pairing "Fiserv's scale with VersaBank's regulated digital asset capabilities gives the industry a trusted foundation to bring stablecoins into established banking and payment systems."

Roughrider Coin is built for banks and credit unions moving money between themselves, and neither release publishes a public token mint address. Tokens named "Roughrider Coin" that have appeared on the pump.fun launchpad are not issued by Bank of North Dakota or VersaBank.

State and bank stablecoins on Solana: Wyoming, Column, SoFi and Jeonbuk

North Dakota is not the first U.S. state with a stablecoin. Wyoming introduced its Frontier Stable Token in August 2025, Decrypt reported at the time of the Roughrider announcement. Roughrider Coin's distinction is distribution: it arrives pre-wired into the banking software of an entire state's interbank network.

The launch also lands in a busy stretch for regulated institutions putting dollar settlement on Solana. In September 2026 Column N.A. launched native stablecoin rails with Solana as its default chain, and SoFi went live with stablecoin settlement on Mastercard's network, most of it running on Solana. Outside the U.S., Jeonbuk Bank completed a Solana stablecoin remittance proof of concept on 30 September 2026.

Fiserv's choice of Solana predates Roughrider. Its FIUSD platform for bank-issued dollar tokens was built on Solana when it launched in June 2025, according to Decrypt, and Roughrider Coin now runs on the same chain under Fiserv's digital asset platform. For Solana, the more interesting number is the one Fiserv has not published yet: how many of its other bank clients follow North Dakota's 90 onto the rail.
