PayPerQ (PPQ.AI)

PayPerQ is an API platform that provides access to multiple AI models through an OpenAI‑compatible interface with pay‑per‑query pricing. Users can run chat, image, video, speech‑to‑text, text‑to‑speech, and document processing via a single endpoint and partners can embed capabilities in their apps.

PayPerQ (PPQ.AI)

PayPerQ, operating at ppq.ai, is a pay-per-use AI access platform built to remove the friction and recurring cost of AI subscriptions. Founded in February 2024 by Matt Ahlborg, the service positions itself as the preferred AI interface for crypto-native developers and privacy-conscious users who want direct access to frontier models without committing to monthly fees or handing over personal data.

What It Is

At its core, PayPerQ is an AI model aggregator and gateway. Users top up a balance — starting from as little as ten cents — and then spend that balance across hundreds of AI models on a per-query basis. The platform aggregates offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Mistral, Google Gemini, Meta, Perplexity, xAI (Grok), Kimi, and others, covering text generation, image synthesis, video generation, audio transcription, and text-to-speech. The average user spends roughly two cents per query and around four dollars per month in total, making PayPerQ substantially cheaper in practice than a stack of individual AI subscriptions.

How It Works

PayPerQ offers three primary access modes:

Web App: A browser-based chat interface that lets users switch between models with a single click. The interface supports standard chat, image generation, video generation, voice dictation, and deep research workflows.

OpenAI-Compatible API: The API base URL (https://api.ppq.ai) is a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI endpoint, meaning any tool or application already configured for OpenAI — Cline, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenWebUI, Aider, and others — can be redirected to PayPerQ by changing a single endpoint and API key. This makes it straightforward for developers to run existing coding agents or automation scripts through PayPerQ's pricing and model selection rather than a single provider's subscription.

Private Whisper Desktop App: A voice dictation application with AI-powered transcription and text cleanup, designed for users who want local, private voice-to-text without cloud-dependent subscription software.

Key Features

No Registration Required: Users can access models via the HTTP 402 payment protocol — a pay-per-request mechanism that requires no account at all. A Lightning invoice is generated per request, enabling fully anonymous AI inference.

Privacy Tiers: PayPerQ explicitly structures its privacy model into three tiers. The default Anon tier stores conversations locally on the user's device. The Zero Data Retention (ZDR) tier routes requests so that the serving provider retains no logs. The Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) tier encrypts inference at the hardware level, meaning even the provider cannot inspect the model inputs or outputs in plaintext.

Routing Preferences: Developers using the API can append routing suffixes to model identifiers to express cost-versus-speed tradeoffs — for example, selecting the cheapest available provider for a given model family (:floor) versus the lowest-latency option (:nitro). The platform switched to Fireworks AI as its primary open-source model provider for improved throughput.

Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC) Auto Top-Up: Users running automated workflows can link a Lightning-compatible wallet via the NWC protocol so that their PayPerQ balance is automatically replenished when it falls below a defined threshold — useful for agentic coding assistants or overnight batch jobs.

Data Enrichment and Web Search: Beyond language models, the API exposes endpoints for web search (via Exa.AI at $0.02 per request), contact lookup, and web scraping, extending it into a general-purpose AI service layer for applications.

Payment Methods

PayPerQ accepts cryptocurrency and credit card top-ups. Crypto options include Bitcoin Lightning (with a five percent bonus), Bitcoin on-chain, Litecoin, Liquid Bitcoin, and Monero. The platform's crypto focus is squarely in the Bitcoin ecosystem, prioritizing Lightning for small, instant, anonymous payments. No native Solana payment rail is currently documented. The Monero option accommodates users who prioritize payment-level privacy in addition to inference-level privacy.

Creator and Team

PayPerQ was created by Matt Ahlborg, who is publicly identified as the platform's founder in the official FAQ. The project operates as a small, independently run service. No venture funding or institutional backing is disclosed.

Ecosystem Fit for Crypto-Native Users

Although PayPerQ's payment stack centers on Bitcoin and Lightning rather than Solana, the service is directly relevant to Solana developers and the broader crypto community. Developers building Solana-adjacent applications — DeFi analytics tools, wallet assistants, trading bots, or on-chain data pipelines — frequently need programmatic AI access without the overhead of managing multiple API subscriptions or exposing email credentials. PayPerQ's OpenAI-compatible interface and anonymous top-up model fits cleanly into that workflow. The pay-as-you-go structure is also a natural match for crypto-native teams accustomed to spending on-demand rather than through recurring SaaS billing.

Current Status

As of July 2026, ppq.ai is fully operational with an active blog updated regularly. Recent posts cover routing preferences, account type explanations, privacy tier comparisons, and integration guides for tools like OpenAI Codex CLI, Claude Desktop, and Perplexity Academic Researcher. The platform continues to add model providers and expand its third-party integration ecosystem.
