Darklake

Darklake Labs was a Solana-native privacy technology startup founded in October 2024. The company's central thesis was straightforward: decentralized finance cannot scale to institutional participation without genuine confidentiality guarantees at the execution layer. Rather than treating privacy as an optional add-on, Darklake built it into the transaction lifecycle from the ground up using zero-knowledge cryptography.

The core product was a privacy-preserving dark pool mechanism for Solana. Traders suffer significant losses to maximal extractable value, a category of exploitation where bots observe pending transactions in the mempool and insert their own orders to front-run or sandwich the original trade. Darklake's approach used zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and multi-party computation (MPC) to conceal execution parameters until settlement, removing the information that MEV bots depend on. Empirical testing showed 99.9% MEV resistance with no added latency — a result that compared favorably to competing approaches.

Zyga: A Proof System Built for Solana's Speed

Darklake's primary technical contribution was Zyga, a dynamic zero-knowledge proof system designed natively for the Solana blockchain. Most existing ZK systems were built for Ethereum's architecture, where a 12-second block time gives circuits room to breathe. Solana processes transactions in roughly 400 milliseconds. That speed advantage is also a constraint: a ZK system that requires re-proving from scratch when any input parameter changes is simply too slow to be practical.

Zyga addressed this with what the team called proof reusability. The system allows live updates of public data — oracle price feeds, lending protocol interest rates, market-making parameters — without invalidating existing proofs or forcing users to regenerate circuits. This made Zyga genuinely compatible with the dynamic environments DeFi protocols operate in, where conditions shift continuously between order submission and execution.

The integration model was also deliberately pragmatic. Zyga was designed to work with existing AMM math and swap interfaces rather than requiring protocols to rebuild their liquidity infrastructure. Execution parameters remained hidden until settlement, but traders and liquidity providers used the same UX they were already familiar with.

A second product surface was zkKYC — a mechanism allowing institutions to prove they had completed know-your-customer verification without putting identity data on-chain. The compliance attestation existed on-chain as a cryptographic proof; the underlying personal information did not. For regulated entities that need to interact with DeFi, this solved a real problem: the current choice between full on-chain identity disclosure and simply not participating.

Research Foundations and Ecosystem Recognition

The Darklake team grounded their approach in academic cryptography. The proof system underlying Zyga was documented in a pre-print posted to the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) ePrint Archive at eprint.iacr.org/2025/1802, covering the one-sided encoding mechanism, security proofs under standard cryptographic assumptions, and performance analysis for Solana deployment. The team maintained active research partnerships with two Brazilian universities and had a patent application in process.

Those credentials earned Darklake rapid recognition within the Solana ecosystem. The project placed second in the DeFi track of the Solana Radar Global Hackathon and was subsequently accepted into the Colosseum Accelerator, the competitive builder program associated with the Solana ecosystem fund. A partnership with Bonsol combined Darklake's blind slippage infrastructure with Bonsol's verifiable computation platform, with the goal of ensuring transactions were validated by cryptographic proofs rather than trust.

The Team

The founding team brought complementary experience across infrastructure engineering, compliance, and cryptography research. Vitor Py Braga, the CEO and technical founder, held engineering roles at Meta and IBM before turning to blockchain. Amber Hales, the COO and co-founder, brought nearly a decade of compliance experience from senior positions at Coinbase and Coincover — the compliance angle being deliberate given Darklake's institutional focus. Tiago Alves, the Head of ZK Research, was an active university professor who led the academic partnerships and anchored the research program.

Acquisition by SOL Strategies

In April 2026, Darklake Labs was acquired by SOL Strategies Inc. (TSX: HODL), a publicly traded Canadian company operating as an institutional Solana validator and treasury platform. The deal closed on April 14, 2026, for $1.2 million USD — structured as $200,000 in cash and 1,047,156 SOL Strategies shares valued at $1 million, with the share consideration subject to a four-month lock-up.

The acquisition brought Vitor Py Braga, Amber Hales, and Tiago Alves into SOL Strategies, where the Zyga system is being developed as the privacy layer for institutional participants on the SOL Strategies platform. SOL Strategies CEO Michael Hubbard framed the rationale plainly: "Privacy is a core functionality needed to bring global finance on-chain." The darklake.fi domain was folded into SOL Strategies' main site following the close.

Darklake's acquisition was part of a broader privacy-focused push by SOL Strategies, which announced the separate acquisition of HoudiniSwap for up to $28 million around the same period, signaling institutional appetite for on-chain privacy infrastructure as a category rather than a one-off bet.

As an independent project Darklake Labs no longer operates. Its technology and team now advance Zyga within the SOL Strategies infrastructure platform, where the immediate focus is on private execution and zkKYC services for the institutional validator and treasury market.
